About The Position

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL), in conjunction with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, Local Union 352 has up to 11 openings available in 1st STEP (School to Training & Employment Program), located in Lansing, MI. This program is designed for high school seniors to gain paid work experience and learn valuable workplace safety principles under direct mentorship. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a $2,000 scholarship to a college/university in Michigan.

Requirements

  • Must be in a senior in High School status at the start of the program, January 2027.
  • Must be available to work 3 hours each weekday, January-May 2027.
  • Must be drug free (pre-employment drug testing is mandatory).
  • Must pass multi-stage screening process.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be at least 17 years old by January 1, 2027.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Nice To Haves

  • A resume is optional but encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Work 3 hours each weekday from January to May 2027.
  • Learn valuable workplace safety principles under direct mentorship.
  • Gain paid work experience.
  • Participate in a multi-stage screening process.
  • Sit, talk, hear, listen, walk, and climb stairs.
  • Traverse uneven terrain.
  • Effectively communicate in writing and orally.
  • Enter and retrieve data from computerized, typed, and written sources.
  • Perform some field work and standing.
  • Potentially travel between field locations.
  • Work in various outdoor temperature and humidity ranges.
  • Occasional exposure to dust and noise.
