About The Position

We are currently looking for a 1:1 Paraprofessional who will work under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher to support a specific student in achieving their individualized goals in an inclusive setting. The student may have physical, developmental, or emotional challenges requiring close attention and assistance throughout the day. Accesspoint RI is a nonprofit organization assisting individuals with developmental disabilities. We pride ourselves on ensuring that individuals are supported and treated with respect and dignity. Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or an associate degree in a related field.
  • Teacher Assistant Training program and the ParaPro test.
  • Ability to support students with multiple disabilities.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with students, staff, and families.
  • Ability to reinforce therapies and strategies, including gross and fine motor skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with positive behavioral support techniques.
  • CPR Certification (Pursuing Cert.).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet agency transportation requirements.
  • Meet all DCYF and Department of Education requirements for working in a school.
  • Ability to lift independently up to 50 lbs. and up to 90 lbs. with assistance.
  • Stand for 70% of the workday, with frequent kneeling, bending, and stooping.
  • Physical capability to assist students with mobility challenges, including pushing and pulling.

  • Must pass a Background Check

  • Completion of the Teacher Assistant Training program and the ParaPro test

Responsibilities

  • Work 1:1 with an assigned student to provide personal and academic support, implementing accommodations and modifications based on the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Assist the lead teacher with implementing developmentally appropriate programs, setting up learning centers, preparing materials, and organizing the classroom environment.
  • Supervise and assist the assigned student during all classroom activities, play, and transitions, ensuring their safety and participation.
  • Support and reinforce student therapies, such as speech, occupational, or physical therapy, as directed by therapists or teachers.
  • Use positive guidance techniques to help students stay focused, manage behaviors, and complete activities.
  • Assist the student with daily tasks, including feeding, toileting, and dressing, ensuring their comfort and well-being throughout the day.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher and support staff to deliver effective instruction and care, including sharing observations and concerns.
  • Encourage and support the student’s communication skills using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, gestures, or other methods.
  • Maintain respectful and professional communication with parents, guardians, and other staff members regarding student progress and needs.
  • Assist in documenting the student's progress and daily activities as required by the teacher or IEP team.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and order of the classroom.
  • Support in toileting and feeding as needed, including hand-over-hand assistance.
  • Order classroom supplies and assist with meal preparation if requested.
  • Participate in school-wide meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Follow procedures and directives as set by the teacher or school administration.
