TL;DR: No applicant tracking system gives every resume one universal score, so judge an ATS resume checker by two things: whether it compares your resume to the job you want, and whether its free result shows what to fix. Teal's free Resume Checker scores your resume and lists its top issues, and Teal's Job Matcher shows the top 5 keywords a saved job asks for and which ones your resume is missing.
The best ATS resume checker compares your resume to the specific job you want and shows you what to fix. A number on its own will not do that, and there is no single ATS score to beat anyway. Each employer sets up its own hiring system, and each checker builds its own number from its own checks.
Teal's free plan does both. The Resume Checker scores your resume and names its top issues, the Job Matcher shows which keywords from a saved job your resume is missing, and you fix both in the same editor.

The best free resume checkers with an ATS score, and what you get free
1. Teal
Best for: job seekers applying to several roles who want to check a resume, fix it for each job and track the application in one place.
Teal's Resume Checker scores your resume from 0 to 100% in under a minute, using 15+ checks for ATS compatibility, formatting and best practices. It flags formatting issues, keyword gaps and weak structure, such as bullets with no measurable result or a missing target title. Free accounts see the top basic issues; Teal+ adds the advanced analysis.
The Job Matcher checks your resume against one job. Pick a job, and it shows which of that job's keywords your resume already uses and which it is missing: the top 5 for free, or every keyword plus your own with Teal+. You fix the resume in the same editor and keep each tailored version with its job in Teal's Job Application Tracker, so when a recruiter calls, you know which version they have.
Price: free, with unlimited resumes and PDF downloads and no credit card. Teal+ costs $13 every 7 days, $29 every 30 days or $79 every 90 days.
2. Jobscan
Best for: a detailed report on one resume against one job description.
You paste a job description, and Jobscan returns a Match Report with a match rate out of 100, five scored categories and 30+ checks. Adding the company or job URL lets it detect which ATS the employer uses. The match rate weighs hard skills first, then education (only when the job asks for an advanced degree), job title, soft skills and other keywords. Word count and measurable results are not part of it.
Free plan: 5 resume scans a month. Price: $49.95 a month, or $89.95 every 3 months with a 7-day trial. Read the full Teal vs. Jobscan comparison.
3. Resume Worded
Best for: a general grade of how a resume is written, without a job post.
Score My Resume gives a score out of 100 based on how many of its checks you pass, and the checks change with your career level. The free result shows the score and the top issues holding it down; line-by-line feedback and the rewriting tools are paid. To compare a resume with a job description, Resume Worded uses a separate keyword scanner. Both tools ask you to create a free account.
Price: Pro costs $49 a month, $99 every 3 months or $229 for a year. The Teal vs. Resume Worded comparison puts the two side by side.
4. SkillSyncer
Best for: occasional job-match scans on a small budget.
SkillSyncer's free plan gives you 2 job match scans a week, each with a job match score and checks for skills and keywords, job title and degree. The free plan marks issues by section, and the paid plan marks the exact words to change and adds word choice, verb, pronoun and date-format checks.
Price: $14.95 a month, or $34.86 billed quarterly.
5. Enhancv
Best for: checking a designed resume while you build it in Enhancv.
Enhancv's checker runs 27 checks. Its score is based on two things: how much of your resume's content it can read and the issues it finds. You can paste a job description to see which skills and keywords you have or are missing. Enhancv's free plan lasts 7 days.
Price: Pro from $39 a month, $69 for 3 months or $99 for 6 months. More in the Teal vs. Enhancv comparison.
6. Rezi
Best for: building a resume in Rezi with its score as a guide.
The Rezi Score rates a resume on 23 metrics. On the free plan, the Rezi Score and AI Keyword Targeting are both limited, and you can create one resume and download up to three PDFs. No payment is needed to start.
Price: Pro $29 a month, or $149 for a lifetime plan. See the Teal vs. Rezi comparison.
7. Kickresume
Best for: students and teachers who qualify for its free Premium plan.
Kickresume's ATS checker builds its score from more than 20 checks, each weighted differently, covering formatting and whether the content includes the keywords and skills the role needs. The ATS Resume Checker is listed in all three paid plans, and verified students and teachers get Premium for free.
Price: $24 a month billed monthly, or $8 a month billed yearly. See the Teal vs. Kickresume comparison.
What an AI resume checker's ATS score really measures
Only what that checker chose to measure. The hiring systems do not hand out one universal score either. Greenhouse, an applicant tracking system, says its AI "doesn't score or rank applications," and that, in most cases, real people review applications one by one, in the order received. Recruiters can search resumes for keywords and mark the ones they choose as preferred or required. Automatic rejection comes from rules the employer sets for each job post, such as rejecting anyone who answers no when asked whether they are legally allowed to work in the country.
Some systems do grade candidates. Workday's HiredScore grades each applicant against the qualifications the employer wrote for that job, but only for employers who use it. Either way, the measure is that employer's job post, not a score a checker can reproduce.
What a checker can test is the part every system shares: whether your file can be read, and whether your resume uses the words the job post uses. Greenhouse accepts .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf and .txt files, and a resume can fail to import when it has characters the system does not recognize.
What is a good resume checker ATS score?
Whatever your tool calls good. Teal calls 80% or higher a good resume score. Jobscan recommends a 75% match rate and says many career counselors and Jobscan users see success at 65%. Resume Worded calls 85 or above good. So a 77% clears Jobscan's mark and falls short of the other two.
Use the score to compare versions of your own resume in the same tool, not to compare tools. The issues list under the score is what tells you what to change.
Which is the most accurate AI resume checker?
The one that reads your resume correctly, and you can test that yourself in a minute. After you upload, look at whether your job titles, dates and sections landed where they belong. If they did not, fix the format before you trust any score.
ChatGPT can compare the text of your resume with a job post you paste in and point out missing terms, but there is no ATS score for it to calculate. Teal's guide to using ChatGPT for your resume covers how to use it as a writing assistant.
Which free ATS resume scanner compares your resume to a job post?
Most of the tools above do in some way, so the real question is how well. Before you trust a free result, make sure the tool does three things:
- It uses the real job post. The keywords come from the description you paste or the job you saved.
- It names the missing words. The result lists the specific skills and terms your resume lacks.
- It lets you check again. After you edit, you should be able to run the same comparison and see what changed.
Add only the keywords your experience supports. Teal's guide to resume keywords shows where to put them.
How to score your resume and fix it for a job in Teal
- Bring in your resume. Upload a .docx or .pdf file, import your LinkedIn profile or paste your resume text into the Resume Builder.
- Read your resume score. Open the Resume Checker to see your score and the top issues to fix.
- Save the job. Bookmark it from 40+ job boards with Teal's Chrome extension, or add it to the Job Application Tracker.
- Open the Job Matcher. In the Resume Builder toolbar, pick the saved job, search for one or paste a description. Green keywords are already in your resume, and red ones are missing.
- Add what fits. Hover over a red keyword to create a bullet from it, or ignore it. Leave out anything you cannot back up in an interview.
- Check again and apply. Re-run the match, then track the application with the resume version you sent.
