TL;DR: Pick Teal if you want a resume that looks well designed, reads cleanly in an employer's hiring system and changes for each job you apply to. Teal's free plan has no time limit and includes 10 templates you can restyle in Design Mode, and Teal+ costs $13 every 7 days or $29 every 30 days. Enhancv's free plan lasts 7 days, and Pro costs $39 a month.

Teal and Enhancv both build a polished resume, write with AI and track your applications for free. The difference that matters over a real search is how long free lasts. Teal's free plan has no time limit, so it lasts as long as your search does. Enhancv's free plan lasts 7 days and adds Enhancv branding.

Say you are applying for marketing roles. It is tempting to pick the most striking template you can find. But for most applications, the best design is one the employer's hiring software can read: one column, your color and type, clean section headings. You can build that resume in either tool. In Teal, each version you tailor stays on the job you saved it for, so you always know which resume went where.

Which resume designs can an applicant tracking system read?

When you apply through a company's careers page, your resume usually goes into an applicant tracking system first. The system reads the file and fills in your profile: name, contact details, job titles, employers and dates. A recruiter then works from that profile.

Greenhouse, an applicant tracking system, lists the resumes its software may not read correctly: resumes with graphics, photos or word art; complex layouts with tables, headers and footers; a name and contact details placed in a header, footer or text box; and a layout in columns. When it cannot read a resume at all, the file is attached to your profile and the details are entered by hand. That is one system's documentation, not a rule for every system, but it is a safe guide to what to leave out.

Design still has a place on a marketing resume. The University of Georgia's career center advises applicants for creative roles that a resume with at least some creative elements is probably the best route, and says that in general they should avoid text boxes, columns, tables and pictures while color, lines and shading are fine. And recruiters skim. In TheLadders' 2012 eye-tracking study of 30 recruiters, the first fit or no-fit decision took about 6 seconds, and almost 80% of review time went to six items: name, current and previous titles and companies, current and previous dates, and education. A design that makes those six easy to find helps you more than one that makes the page memorable.

Now check both tools against Greenhouse's list. Enhancv's photo and logo designs are graphics, and two-column layouts, which both tools offer, are on it too. What both sources leave room for is one column, a deliberate choice of font and an accent color, and the basic settings in Teal's Design Mode cover all three. Teal's marketing manager resume guide says it plainly: "Keep it clean. Avoid graphics and complex designs that confuse ATS systems, even if your creative instincts suggest otherwise." For applications through company portals, pick a single-column template.

How do you make a marketing resume look designed in Teal?

A Teal template is a starting point. Design Mode is where it takes on your font, your color and your layout.

  1. Start from what you have. Import your current resume as a .docx or .pdf, paste in your LinkedIn profile URL, or paste the text.
  2. Pick a single-column template. Browse the resume templates and choose one with one column and clear section headings.
  3. Set your look in Design Mode. Choose the font, line height and accent color. Pick a preset or enter your brand's hex code. Set the skills layout as a comma list or bulleted columns, then the margins and Letter or A4 paper. The Advanced tab, with bullet symbols, text sizes, weights and borders, is on Teal+.
  4. Check it. Run the Resume Checker and fix the top issues it lists before you tailor anything.
  5. Tailor it to the job. Save the job to your tracker, attach a resume version, and open the Job Matcher to see the job's top keywords. Work in the ones that describe experience you really have. A keyword you cannot back up will not help you in the interview. Teal's Resume Job Description Match page shows how the check works.
  6. Tighten the wording. Use your free AI credits to draft bullets, a summary or a cover letter, then edit each draft until it sounds like you.
  7. Download the PDF and apply. The version you sent stays on the saved job in the Job Tracker.
