About The Position

The Zoo Ranger is responsible for providing a visible and positive presence to Fresno’s Chaffee Zoo Corporation’s (FCZC) guests to promote safety, adherence to zoo rules, and create a fun, engaging experience. The Zoo Ranger supports FCZC’s mission and vision by building community trust and providing a safe and welcoming environment for all of our guests and employees.

Requirements

  • Minimum one (1) year of paid work experience in security, emergency response, or customer service environment required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience using Microsoft Office required.
  • Strong verbal English communications skills required both oral and written required.
  • A valid California driver's license, valid vehicle insurance, enrolled in the CA Employer Pull Notice program and successful completion of the FCZ Drivers Training Program required.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Oxygen (O2) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Walks throughout the assigned area(s) to maintain a visible presence in the Zoo for guests. Greets guests in a friendly, professional manner and demonstrates an approachable, service-focused demeanor.
  • Engages proactively with guests to provide directions, resolve concerns, offer assistance, and ensure a positive and safe experience regarding other aspects of Zoo operations.
  • Monitors guest activity and addresses violations of Zoo rules to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) management in a professional manner.
  • Provide emergency medical assistance to guests and staff with First Aid supplies, including CPR, AED, and O2 support, until advanced medical personnel arrive. Completion of required medical authorizations for employee injuries will be the responsibility of Zoo Rangers.
  • Completes Incident Report forms accurately and promptly following any accident, injury, near miss, safety concern, or security event.
  • Works calmly and authoritatively with the public. Provides professional customer service in adverse environments such as crowds or with difficult members of the public.
  • Alerts EHS management of incidents requiring additional attention or treatment.
  • Assists in reuniting lost and found children with parents or guardians.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact in emergency scenarios (Incident Commander), assisting with coordination and communication with first responders and Zoo leadership.
  • Serve as the Incident Commander role as designated by management.
  • Participate as a member of the Animal Risks Mitigations (ARMS) team as designated by management.
  • Provides crowd control as needed during peak attendance periods and special events.
  • Opens secures and activates all building alarms in accordance with Zoo procedures.
  • Provides escorts and equipment for animal transport, and some zoo deliveries.
  • Maintains a high level of situational awareness while patrolling the zoo.
  • Participates in emergency drills and debriefs and may be designated to be the primary responder during certain scenarios, under the direction of the EHS leadership team.
  • Stays current with all required safety and security certification.
  • Safely operate a vehicle for business purposes including but not limited to going to and from the zoo’s facilities and offsite.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support team and organizational goals.
