About The Position

The YReads! Program is a literacy and mentoring initiative for kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Pinellas County Schools throughout St. Petersburg, Florida. It uses curriculum-based literacy instruction to support struggling readers in phonetics, sight-word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The tutor assists the program coordinator during program hours to help achieve program goals and follow procedures. The position is part-time, after school, four days per week, for approximately 15 hours per week, at $15.00 per hour.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 years of age.
Desire or interest in learning about literacy intervention.
Experience working with children in an educational environment.
Compassion and empathy for struggling readers.
Pass a 10-panel drug screen.
Clear a Level 2 background check through DCF (Florida).

Nice To Haves

Tutoring experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist with student supervision, maintain order, and positively reinforce good choices when appropriate.
Assist students to and from the restroom.
Assist the coordinator with picking up and dropping off students around the school.
Oversee and ensure mandatory procedures are followed when parents or guardians pick up students.
Maintain required paperwork, including testing records and volunteer and student sign-in and sign-out logs.
Teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YReads Coordinator and the program's curricula.
Attend required abuse risk management training.
Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements and job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
