About The Position

The East Van Education Centre (EVEC) is an alternate school offering High School Graduation and optional adult Dogwood Diploma to youth (ages 13 – 18) in the Vancouver School District. The program integrates academic, recreational, and counselling activities for students who require a higher staff-to-student ratio or modified coursework. The program also provides a Breakfast Club and a lunch program. Programming includes counselling, assessments, individualized learning plans, full or adapted academic assignments, and recreation. Hours & Conditions of Work Regular Full Time 35 hours weekly Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:00pm Position Summary The Youth Worker integrates academic programming and recreational activities with individual and group counselling, within a partnership between PCRS and the Vancouver School Board. This position works with students in planning and achieving goals identified with the student. This requires a sound understanding of child development, goal setting and other strategies to assist a student to have success. The successful applicant will possess a solid ability to provide behavior management, family outreach, and in some instances may be required to provide teacher support in the classroom environment. As part of a team of youth workers and teachers, the applicant will have strong skills in mediation, recreational/ program planning, relationship building, assessment. It is expected that the candidate will have good knowledge and skill in working with youth who often experience barriers and work to promote resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a positive role model for youth
  • Seeks out opportunities for experiential learning and community connection through recreational programming
  • Provides individual supervision and behavioral support when required
  • Supervises areas outside the school including break area and resource room
  • Contributes to developing supportive approaches towards achieving individual goals for youth
  • Participates in IEP development outcomes
  • Maintains participant files with daily documentation as required by agency protocols
  • Maintains petty cash records according to the financial policies of the agency
  • Maintains contact with families and/or caregivers, social workers or other professionals, where appropriate
  • Manages emergency situations safely and in accordance with agency policy
  • Maintains good safety practices and a preventative approach
  • Attends and participates as required in all staff meetings, planning meetings, committee meetings
  • Maintains petty cash records according to the financial policies of the agency
