About The Position

The Youth Worker provides group work, outreach and individual support services to immigrant and refugee youth. The Youth Worker is responsible for recruiting eligible youth and for planning and facilitate program content. This position also conducts administrative duties necessary for tracking program results.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience working with multicultural and vulnerable youth
  • Experience with public speaking, group presentations, and content development
  • Knowledge on the needs of vulnerable youth and mental health support
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent engagement skills in working with multicultural youth
  • Excellent group facilitation skills
  • Excellent team player with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to deal effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent planning, time management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook and internet/social media
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities and program demands
  • Ability to make decisions with sound judgment
  • Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor degree in Social Science, Human Services or related discipline preferred
  • Training to support youth in camping trips is preferred (e.g. Wilderness First Aid)
  • Hiking and camping experiences are an asset
  • Ability to speak multiple languages is an asset
  • Standard First Aid Certification is an asset
  • Food Safe Certificate is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and facilitates weekly workshops, field trips, and outdoor recreation activities for immigrant youth between age 15-30 years old
  • Guides youth on backcountry camping trips, leadership retreats, day hikes, and other outdoor recreation types of activities
  • Facilitates youth to acquire wilderness survival skills
  • Promotes program, recruits participants, helps with the registration process and answers public enquiries regarding the YLM program
  • Offers youth mentorship and guidance throughout the program
  • Creates opportunities for group to connect and build sense of belonging
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment that is culturally open and accessible in order to support the personal development of the youth
  • Communicates with participants, parents, volunteers, vendors, and community partners in a professional manner about program updates
  • Networks with the community via social media and participates in related networking meetings
  • Contributes towards program evaluation and improvement measures
  • Coordinates logistics for their cohorts of youth, including scheduling with vendors and purchasing supplies to support the program
  • Recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to assist in the implementation of daily program activities
  • Shares trends of service needs with the Program Manager and compile reports
  • Maintains up-to-date group records and individual youth case notes
  • Maintains statistical records for accountability, funding application and development purposes
  • Attends team/division staff meetings and training opportunities as required
  • Provides support to agency wide fundraising initiatives
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by Program Manager or Program Director
