About The Position

The Youth Support Partner Supervisor is an experienced social services worker who ensures that communications with arrested youth and their families is developmentally appropriate, trauma informed, and will utilize screening and assessment tools to identify youth who are eligible to be diverted out of the justice system. The Youth Support Partner Supervisor will supervise up to five Youth Support Partners, who are peer specialists with direct experience in the juvenile justice system as youth or guardians. The Youth Support Partner Supervisor and Youth Support Partners will serve as primary points of contact for arrested youth and families during the arrest and booking process and will assist families in accessing community-based services and supports. Youth Support Partner Supervisors and Partners will be embedded in a Philadelphia Police Division that holds arrested youth in custody during the initial arrest and booking process. The YSPS and YSP will work closely with juvenile probation officers to ensure that intake officers have complete information to make initial decisions about whether a child is held in detention or released to family after arrest and will assist families with transportation when required. The Youth Support Partner Supervisor will ensure that youth and family confidentiality is maintained, and that information received during screenings is recorded accurately.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree. Master’s in social work preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience performing the Youth Support Work for a major city.
  • Valid clearances including criminal background, child abuse and FBI must be received prior to start date.
  • Experience working with justice-involved youth and their families.
  • Ability to develop, manage and maintain relationship with others.
  • Ability to work with law enforcement, probation and juvenile justice stakeholders while maintaining role as an advocate for youth.
  • Ability to maintain a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages growth.
  • Ability to work with people in high-stress and emotional situations.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Understanding of neighborhoods and communities in Philadelphia and the resources available in Philadelphia communities to help youth and families succeed.
  • Understanding of Adolescent Development and Trauma Informed Practices and culture of each youth and share with their team.
  • Ability to work in the evening or on the weekend, as needed.
  • Fluency in English is required; Spanish or other threshold language preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the work of Youth Support Partners, provide professional mentoring and support to Youth Support Partners to help them develop skills and expertise.
  • Promote developmentally appropriate, trauma informed practices in interactions with youth and families.
  • Offer suggestions and develop solutions to help promote effective and efficient work processes and innovative programs. Identify areas where additional services are needed in communities.
  • Assist police operations staff and Youth Support Partners in responses to youth in mental health crisis.
  • Address concerns from youth, family members or police operations staff.
  • Supplement the work of Youth Support Partners in responses to youth in mental health crisis.
  • Collect medical and social history information required to properly assess the needs of the youth and family.
  • Conduct screenings and assessments to assist with diversion and service referrals.
  • Communicate with family members of arrested youth, answer questions, and assist with transportation support as needed.
  • Coordinate with intake probation to provide information relevant to decisions to release the child to guardians or hold in detention following arrest.
  • Refer eligible youth to pre-booking diversion staff.
  • Assist families and youth in making appointments and connecting to voluntary community-based services.
  • Maintain high levels of advocacy and member confidentiality.
