About The Position

This position assists in selecting materials for the youth collection, conducting youth programs, monitoring patron behavior, maintaining library materials, and training staff. The role is crucial in setting the tone for library youth programs and requires an approachable, customer-service-oriented individual. Duties include assisting patrons, especially children and families, receiving direction from supervisors, assisting with reports and clerical tasks, maintaining the Family Place Space area, providing services at the Youth Services Desk, organizing the Youth Services Office and Children’s Programming Room, assisting patrons with book selection and check-out, maintaining youth program records, assisting with and conducting children’s and teen programs, assisting with Read-to-Win programming, planning and staffing city events outside of library hours, and creating book displays and decorations for the Youth Services area. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Microsoft Windows, and Internet navigation
  • Experience working with children in an educational or library setting
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions
  • Knowledge of the needs and abilities of children and the available library materials and services
  • Ability to help manage behavior of children, promote their trust and encourage good reading habits
  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the City
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations
  • Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; Federal, State, and local regulations
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations
  • Knowledge of current office practices and procedures and knowledge of the operation of standard office equipment and software
  • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively in English in both written and verbal form
  • Skill in researching and understanding complex written materials
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations
  • Ability to communicate detailed and often sensitive information effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing

Nice To Haves

  • Previous youth library work experience
  • Two (2) years of college and/or experience in a public services unit of a Library

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning and maintaining the Family Place Space area
  • Providing services at the Youth Services Desk
  • Organizing and upkeep of the Youth Services Office area and Children’s Programming Room
  • Assisting patrons with book selection and check-out, as needed
  • Maintaining youth program records
  • Assisting and conducting, as assigned, children’s and teen programs
  • Assisting with and training in Read-to-Win programming
  • Assisting in planning and staffing weekend and/or evening city events outside of library hours
  • Assisting in creating book displays and seasonal decorations for Youth Services area
