About The Position

The City and Borough of Juneau, Public Libraries is looking for someone to join our team as the Youth Services Librarian. We are seeking applicants who have exceptional customer service skills, a passion for books and learning, strong computer skills, and an interest in promoting library services to children of all ages and their families. The ideal candidate for this position possesses: Strong customer service skills. Experience supervising a variety of professional positions. Strong computer skills. Interest in assisting patrons of all ages, interests, and abilities. The ability to plan and implement a wide variety of events and programs. The ability to work effectively with internal and external colleagues. The ability to take initiative. Clear written and verbal communication skills. Exceptional attendance, reliability and dependability. Strong attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Master of Library Science, Master of Library & Information Science, or equivalent degree from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • A Bachelor's degree including some course work in library or information science, media services, or a closely related field; AND one (1) year of experience as a Librarian.
  • Recent MLS/MLIS coursework or experience in the use and organization of electronic information.
  • A valid Driver’s License required at time of appointment and for continued employment.
  • Employee MUST have access to reliable personal transportation to transport self to all library branches.

Responsibilities

  • Regular shifts and occasional relief shifts on public service desks.
  • Planning and presenting library programs for children including story times, class visits, and the Summer Reading Program.
  • Serving as liaison with school librarians, public and private school teachers, daycare providers, and other groups and agencies concerned with youth in Juneau.
  • Participating in reading-related community activities including presenting workshops to parents and teachers.
  • Scheduling, promoting, and conducting public library story times at all library branches.
  • Scheduling library visits by pre-school and other youth groups.
  • Planning, presenting, promoting and conducting special programs for children such as shows, contests, exhibits, and visiting authors and illustrators.
  • Preparing or assigning preparation of promotional flyers, posters, calendars and public service announcements.
  • Participating in system wide management team and maintaining current knowledge of trends and developments in the library field.
