About The Position

Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of after school and summer programming targeting at-risk youth in a licensed and/or non-licensed setting. Provides oversight of all program operations including, staff, student, family, and community components, in addition to academics, life skills, and recreation opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree OR a combination of education and experience that is similarly equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a child related field. Child related field includes early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, physical education and recreation, child development, child guidance/counseling, child psychology, family studies, social work, human services, and youth development.
  • Ability to implement program plans appropriate for meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of at risk youth.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize a number of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to identify, contact, and work with area providers of social services, education, and recreation in both public and private sectors in the interest of aiding at-risk youth.
  • Ability to emphasize and communicate with youth and families facing economic, social, health, and educational barriers.
  • Ability and willingness to continue professional growth and skill development.
  • Working knowledge of intermediate internet applications and programs including Google technology and Microsoft Office Word and Excel. The ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs for this position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
  • Ability to provide services for those persons facing economic, social, health, age, and educational barriers.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment (as deemed necessary).
  • Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Youth and Family Programs school year, and summer youth programming that provides academic enrichment, recreation, and life skills opportunities in a structured setting.
  • Establish and maintain an ongoing schedule of program operations that promote the academic, emotional, and social development of school age youth.
  • Recruit and retain enrollment for the program.
  • Recruit, train, and assess program staff.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision and direction to assigned staff including but not limited to: establishing work methods/techniques; conferring with staff on their work and counseling staff upon their selected approaches to accomplishing work goals; serving as a liaison to professional consultants and volunteers; evaluating staff performance; evaluating staff development needs and determining appropriate training or coaching; maintaining accurate, complete, and correct records of staff development events for reporting purposes; and resolving staff conflicts.
  • Manage, in partnership with grants staff, the development and implementation of contracts and grants to include program goals, service methods, staffing patterns, implementation design, periodic reviews of activities and progress towards goals, modification of program plans, expenditure of grant funds, reporting to funding sources, and evaluation of activities.
  • Represent the agency in partnership with grants staff to those conducting monitoring or audit reviews. Prepare materials required for such visits, address issues arising from visits, and submit follow-up materials to the monitors/auditors as necessary.
  • Manage program budget and expend funds according to grant and agency guidelines.
  • Purchase program supplies as needed to maintain day to day program operations and to fulfill grant requirements.
  • Collect and manage all program records and data in compliance with DHS childcare Licensing standards, grant requirements, as well as internal agency tracking.
  • Ensure program facility is appropriate and includes adequate safety and cleaning equipment and adheres to standards outlined in DHS Childcare Licensing for school Age sites.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships between local school districts, community members and partners. Additionally, establish and/or serve on various committees and advisory councils.
  • Attend local and national conferences relevant to the field of school age care and families.
  • Promote and put into practice Michigan Model Standards for Out of School Time (MOST)
  • Maintain consistent contact with Assistant Director of Youth and Family Programs to update on progress and/or challenges.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards assigned work, clients, and staff, and a willingness to work with others.
  • Perform work in a professional manner that upholds Wayne Metro’s policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
