The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, with approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. This Youth Program Education Assistant I (YPEA I) position, located in Murdoch Developmental Center’s Statewide Programs, provides services to children with intellectual disabilities/developmental disabilities who display extreme behavioral challenges. The role involves assisting professional educational staff in school-based classrooms, acting as a job coach at job sites, and providing direct support in a residential setting as needed. The incumbent will receive extensive training in Person-Centered Planning, North Carolina Interventions (NCI), Behavior Intervention Procedures, Skill Training Procedures, and Positive Interaction Procedures. All programs utilize an Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) approach, designed to reduce behavioral excesses (e.g., physical and verbal aggression) and accelerate positive social skills (e.g., communication, conflict resolution skills, and cooperation). Treatment also includes training in self-help, education, communication, vocation, and recreation as deemed necessary by the interdisciplinary treatment team. Behavior programs are integrated across all training areas, considering the individual’s eventual return to the community. Individuals in these programs have histories of aberrant behavior, including physical aggression, verbal aggression, property destruction, spitting, feces smearing, running away, self-mutilation, and noncompliance. All employees of Murdoch Center are designated as ESSENTIAL for adverse weather and emergency events. Murdoch Developmental Center is a 24/7 state residential facility in Butner, NC, serving individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) in a caring community.
