About The Position

NSCS’ Youth Elemento is looking for a Young Adult Peer Mentor. The Young Adult Peer Mentor uses lived experience to connect with and inspire young adults with mental health challenges. We are particularly looking for a mentor that has some experience working with young adults experiencing substance abuse challenges. The Young Adult Peer Mentor provides structured, one-to-one, strength-based support services, groups and is responsible in ensuring the access center is a safe space for all young adults. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position with specific working hours from Monday & Tuesday 9am-5pm, and Wednesday-Friday 10am-6pm.

Requirements

  • High school diploma OR GED
  • Bilingual in Spanish required
  • Must have personal experience living with mental health challenges, substance use, trauma or system involvement and a willingness to share their journey.
  • System involvement and personal lived experience includes but not limited to: Immigration, Court involvement, Gender and sexuality, Homelessness, Disability, Foster care.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to work in the community
  • Must be 21+

Responsibilities

  • Providing Support: Engage in one-on-one and group sessions, offering support and guidance to young adults facing adversities related to mental health and/or substance use.
  • Facilitating Groups: Plan and conduct groups on essential topics such as stress management, coping mechanisms, healthy relationships, and positive lifestyle choices.
  • Resource Navigation: Assist young adults in connecting with local resources, including counseling services, support groups, and wellness programs.
  • Creating a Safe Space: Establish an inclusive and non-judgmental environment where young adults feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, struggles, and aspirations.
  • Promoting Advocacy: Encourage young adults to voice their experiences and advocate for mental health awareness within their communities.
  • Professionalism: Ensure all services are provided in a professional manner, ensuring privacy, safety, and respecting the youth and family’s dignity and right to choice.
