About The Position

Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT) is seeking a Youth Peer Leader for its West Sacramento Futures Grant, a community violence prevention initiative. This project aims to reduce gun violence by increasing community awareness of prevention strategies and resources, promoting safety, educating youth and caregivers about Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), and strengthening community connections. The Peer Leader will work alongside partner organizations and community members to achieve these goals. The role involves participating in a Community of Practice (CoP) that meets approximately twice a month to learn about violence prevention, develop outreach materials, plan community engagement activities, and coordinate the West Sacramento Futures Summit. The initiative is coordinated by PRO Youth & Families and funded through the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (Byrne SCIP), administered by the City of West Sacramento.

Requirements

  • Must believe in the mission, vision, and values of IYT.
  • Knows and can successfully articulate the organization and program mission, vision, and values to other stakeholders and collaborators.
  • Strong communication skills that can both inspire and push others to accomplish their goals.
  • Ability to operate with an appropriate, responsible level of transparency and vulnerability, engendering confidence and trust.
  • Ability to self-motivate to achieve results.
  • A multi-tasker with a solid ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and produce quality results.
  • In high school or live in West Sacramento.
  • Be between the ages of 16 and 24 at the time of enrollment.
  • Live or attend school in the City of West Sacramento.
  • Be available for Community of Practice meetings, trainings, outreach activities, and project events.
  • Be legally eligible to work in the United States and provide required employment documentation.
  • Complete all hiring and onboarding requirements set by their employing partner organization.
  • Agree to project and organizational policies on professionalism, conduct, attendance, confidentiality, and participant safety.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive), and Zoom for virtual collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a non-profit or mission-driven organization is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attending Community of Practice meetings, training, and project activities, and contributing youth perspective and ideas.
  • Helping create youth-friendly educational materials and messaging about gun violence prevention.
  • Sharing information and resources with peers, families, and community members.
  • Helping plan and support the West Sacramento Futures Summit - providing input on content, helping promote the event, and supporting it on the day.
  • Keeping required project records, such as activity logs, attendance records, and surveys.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
