About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Youth Corps Member Lead is responsible for carrying out the objectives of the Lead Youth Corps and members of the Washoe Tribe. This role assists with the implementation of environmental projects and field activities, monitors the condition of Tribal natural resources, and maintains the confidentiality of all privileged information. The position involves supervising, training, and evaluating Youth Corps Members, instructing them in conservation and resource protection, and developing their leadership skills. The Lead is also responsible for the care, maintenance, and security of equipment and property, as well as recordkeeping and personnel administration.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and two years in a related field or education and experience.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of basic environmental terms.
  • Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to work under harsh weather and terrain conditions.
  • Ability to be sensitive to Tribal cultural needs of the communities in which the work is performed.
  • Wildland Firefighting Training
  • Arbor (including tree climbing, rope safety, knots, limbing)
  • First-Aid and CPR/AED Certification
  • Chain Saw Training/S212 Certification, Power Tools Safety and Operation, Heavy Equipment Safety and Operation; Chipper Safety and Operation, and Trail Construction and Maintenance.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Obtain or possess a valid driver’s license for either the State of Nevada or California within 30 days.
  • Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe’s driving policy.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Youth Corps Members.
  • Supervise a crew of young men and women working on public service conservation projects in urban and rural areas, some of which may be in remote areas.
  • Teach Youth Corps Members the importance of work productivity, teamwork, safe work habits, and discipline.
  • Hold Youth Corps Members accountable for their behavior and recommend disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Instruct Youth Corps Members in the protection and conservation of natural resources using nature-based solutions.
  • Instruct Youth Corps Members in skills such as construction, landscaping, erosion control, and trail building and maintenance.
  • Instruct Youth Corps Members in heavy equipment operations and safety protocols and procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies such as wildland fires, floods, snow events, pest eradication, and mudslides, taking immediate action in life-threatening situations.
  • Teach, direct, and counsel Youth Corps Members, developing their leadership skills and mentoring leaders.
  • Supervise Youth Corps Members during non-work hours (night and weekend supervision, if assigned), ensuring their health and safety.
  • Provide informal counseling to Youth Corps Members and refer to formal counseling if needed.
  • Monitor the educational attainment of Youth Corps Members engaged in non-work educational opportunities.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation and recommend repairs and maintenance.
  • Drive and operate vehicles and equipment, performing minor repairs and maintenance.
  • Identify, select, and train Youth Corps Members drivers, assisting in their attainment of an appropriate license.
  • Maintain time and leave records.
  • Develop supervisor's reports of injuries, disciplinary reports, and weekly project and safety reports.
  • Document conservation awareness activities.
  • Perform other duties as required.
