About The Position

Zach Gordon Youth Services is looking for a qualified individual to fill our Youth Advocate position at Shéiyi X aat Hít Youth Shelter. The ideal candidate enjoys teens, is willing to meet youth where they are at and not give up on them, and understands healthy boundaries when working with vulnerable populations. The role requires someone who can remain calm in a crisis, has a strong ability to build relationships, and understands the impact of childhood trauma, systemic inequities, and historical trauma. Skills in navigating systems and paperwork are important, as is a willingness to ask questions. The position values and lifts up youth’s own identities, requiring strong communication and empathy skills. The ability to teach youth in one-on-one and group settings, as well as essential life skills like interviewing, budgeting, bill paying, grocery shopping, and meal planning, is necessary. Teamwork to create a safe and uplifting space is critical.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
  • Any combination of work experience or post-secondary education totaling six (6) months in any field.
  • Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of appointment.
  • Ability to pass a criminal records report (Non-FBI) and a National Criminal History report through the FBI, with no convictions that result in a direct nexus to the primary duties involving supervising minors.

  • Experience working with youth and/or families impacted by trauma.
  • Experience coordinating patient referral or care services.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating care for youth who come into the shelter.
  • Working with youth to create a plan of care and connect them to needed services.
  • Providing referrals and coordinating with partner organizations serving youth.
  • Providing mediation to families and caregivers to help youth transition home.
  • Helping youth communicate their needs effectively to adults in their lives.
  • Providing skill-building activities and positive youth development opportunities.
  • Conducting work both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Creating a warm and welcoming culture of acceptance and non-judgment at the shelter.
  • Providing supervision and oversight to ensure youth safety at all times.
