About The Position

Directs the activities of yard personnel in order to ensure good customer service and safe and efficient movement of goods and equipment on the premises.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Five (5) years yard operations experience
  • Equivalent education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Manages yard staff and directs workers in loading, unloading and movement of materials on the premises utilizing material handling equipment and machinery.
  • Oversees receiving of yard materials and instructs yard workers in receiving and storage procedures.
  • Ensures that employees receive proper training and certification, if necessary, to operate equipment and machinery used in yard.
  • Ensures that equipment is serviced on schedule and maintained effectively.
  • Inspects loading operations for outgoing delivery to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits and safety regulations.
  • Prepares and reconciles bills of lading and packing slips.
  • Provides on-the-job training to outside or new yard employees including product knowledge of items stored in yard and warehouse; housekeeping and safety procedures.
  • Performs the same duties as other yard personnel on occasion.
  • Ensures that outside areas are kept neat and clean and scraps and yard debris are appropriately recycled or disposed.
  • Reports safety hazards and handles remedial action.
  • Assists customers in loading and load building.
  • Provides delivery status information, inventory availability and answers related questions.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices in order to prevent injury to self or co-workers.
  • Attends periodic safety meetings as required.
  • May recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
  • Leads and directs employees including assigning, monitoring and reviewing work progress and accuracy, providing guidance, addressing escalated issues and training less experienced team members.
  • May provide input on the performance of assigned employees to management.
