About The Position

SMS Equipment is growing and looking for a Yard Person to join their team. This role focuses on the general maintenance and upkeep of the yard, working with the largest and most advanced earthmoving equipment. The ideal candidate enjoys finding solutions, prioritizes safety, and is excited about working in this environment.

Requirements

Minimum of 6 months experience in a similar position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to operate a loader, forklift and crane.
Basic mechanical knowledge related to heavy equipment.
Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Knowledge, experience to operate heavy equipment well enough to move the machines around the yard.
Ability to work in a team environment and with minimal supervision.
Strong communication, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
Requires high degree of attention, skill, and dexterity.
Strong work ethic, commitment to excellence, and acute safety awareness.

Nice To Haves

Prior experience in an industrial or trade-related role is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Safely handle deliveries and equipment movements, loading and unloading material.
Organize and maintain machine keys.
Maintain the status of equipment on the yard.
Clean, wash and make ready the equipment.
Keep the yard free of clutter and debris, providing a storage area for surplus parts, components, materials, etc. that will be used by other employees.
Clear snow away from the yard, steps, sidewalks and entrances of the building during periods of snow.
Perform fence repair tasks as the fence around the perimeter of the works yard becomes damaged.
Use loader and forklift to transport parts, equipment and materials to areas in the works yard.
Deliver and pick up parts.
General yard maintenance.
