About The Position

The Yard Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers within the distribution yard. This role supports warehouse and transportation operations by positioning trailers at dock doors, maintaining yard organization, and ensuring timely flow of inbound and outbound freight in a fast-paced 3PL (third-party logistics) environment.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to operate yard tractor and back trailers safely in tight spaces
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
  • Basic computer skills or experience with warehouse/yard management systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Frequent climbing in and out of yard tractor
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous yard driver, CDL, or commercial driving experience preferred
  • CDL may be required depending on operation
  • Experience in a 3PL or high-volume distribution center
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and yard management systems (YMS)
  • Strong time management and ability to prioritize tasks

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a yard tractor (spotter truck) to move trailers to and from dock doors and designated yard locations
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety issues promptly
  • Maintain accurate records of trailer locations using yard management systems (YMS) or manual logs
  • Coordinate with warehouse, dispatch, and transportation teams to prioritize trailer moves
  • Ensure trailers are properly secured, including wheel chocks, landing gear, and trailer locks
  • Monitor yard conditions to ensure a safe, clean, and organized environment
  • Verify trailer numbers, seal integrity, and load status as required
  • Assist with basic yard audits and inventory tracking of trailers and containers
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and DOT regulations
  • Respond to changing operational needs, including peak volume periods and weather conditions
