About The Position

Under the direction of the SACC Director, the Y’s Kids Counselor provides a quality experience to children and parents that focus on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • For the Lead Counselor position; Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of college or equivalent experience in education, childcare, or youth programming.
  • Have a working knowledge of elementary school aged children, their developmental stages, and must assist in planning activities according to the capabilities and interest.
  • Ability to work in a team setting, values education, and have a working knowledge of leisure time activities in the areas of recreational youth sports, arts, and crafts.
  • Able to relate to children and parents and must stay within the YMCA safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Certifications: CPR/FA, within 30 days of hire

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize the needs and safety of children above all.
  • Arrive at work and be at designated station by assigned time.
  • Plan, supervise, and take an active part in all activities.
  • Take daily written attendance of assigned group. Parents must sign their child in (only full days) and out.
  • Take roll, by name, for your group every time location is changed in or outside of the YMCA.
  • Carry children’s files in group bag at all times.
  • Assist Lead Counselor with the upcoming weekly activity plans for your groups.
  • Follow all Y’s Kids schedules. Changes must be approved by the School Age Coordinator.
  • Responsible for putting their group’s whereabouts on the dry erase board in the lobby area.
  • Keep written records of personal notes and schedules pertaining to all participants. Attach notes concerning medication or authorization to pick up to the child’s packet.
  • Administer correct medications to children in their assigned group as needed. Record all medication given and the times on the proper form of each participant’s packet.
  • Administer first aid in a timely manner as needed and fill out all proper documentation.
  • Discipline participants when appropriate and fill out all proper documentation.
  • Complete general housekeeping duties related to activities. Pay special attention to ensure the restrooms are clean and clutter free after a group uses them.
  • Assist with the preparation, serving, and clean up of all snacks.
  • Communicate with other counselors, coordinators, and other YMCA staff frequently and appropriately.
  • Check for safety of materials, equipment, and facilities daily.
  • Ensure that all children follow all of the general YMCA rules, as well as the Y’s Kids rules.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by greeting all participants, maintaining a clean and safe facility and demonstrating professional conduct at all times.
  • Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
