About The Position

An Operations Technician Apprentice receives classroom and on-the-job training in the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of mechanical and electrical equipment in a water or wastewater treatment plant. This is a three-year apprenticeship program where participants are under contract for that period. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a rotating shift with evening, night, weekend, holiday, and callback hours as required or held over until properly relieved or for emergencies. Work is performed in a water or wastewater treatment plant where there is exposure to chemical dust and fumes, extremes of heat or cold, and noxious odors. Work requires moderate physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Must upload a copy of your valid driver’s license with application at time of applying.
  • Must apply for a valid Temporary State of Maryland Certificate, issued by the Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators on the first day of employment.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to learn to read meters and gauges and record readings.
  • Must complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint if selected for positions of trust.
  • Must complete a mandatory six-month probation.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid Temporary State of Maryland Certificate is a requirement of employment.
