About The Position

Performs difficult technical work inspecting the operations of the department and adjust processes as directed, training employees on new and updated processes and procedures, reviewing time cards, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the WWTP Superintendent. Continuous supervision is exercised over WWTP Operators and WWTP Laborer(s).

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating a wastewater treatment facility; thorough knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operational processes, equipment and compliance monitoring.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations regarding operations, water quality and safety.
  • Ability to interpret and compile statistical data.
  • Ability to coordinate the daily activities of operations staff and the effective operation of all equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the safe operation of light to medium construction equipment and vehicles.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to plan, supervise and review the work of operations staff.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Class III Indiana Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation certification upon hire.
  • The ability to obtain a Class IV Indiana Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation certification within two (2) years of hire.
  • Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with overseeing the daily operations and staff of the Department; trains employees on department processes and procedures and ensures compliance; schedules employees and distributes work assignments; recommends disciplinary action and corrective instruction as necessary.
  • Prepares entries in the operator log; reviews safety inspections and maintenance requests; enters analytical data into computer system.
  • Inspects plant and operational records to adjust operations as directed ensuring compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews and approves times time cards; schedules leave requests.
  • Assists with process and procedure development and training.
  • Performs the duties of the WWTP Operator as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains assigned inventory; orders supplies as needed.
  • Offers input regarding treatment plant projects and upgrades, and major equipment and material purchases.
  • Responds to emergencies and process irregularities both during and outside of normal work hours.
