About The Position

The University Learning Center (ULC) is dedicated to providing academic support to The New School’s diverse student population through one-on-one tutoring sessions, workshops, and more. Tutors help students become stronger and more independent learners, so that they succeed in achieving their academic goals. Tutors work one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students of varying skill levels on general and graduate-level writing. Support during sessions can entail demonstrating the basics to assisting with complex problems and a range of issues in between.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant program at The New School
  • At least one year of tutoring experience or teaching writing/English in a formal academic setting
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality
  • Able to commit to 6 (or more) tutoring hours per week

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students with ADHD
  • Federal Work Study preferred
  • Experience working with ESL and graduate-level students strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Tutor graduate and undergraduate students in a variety of writing projects and assist with general academic skill building such as oral presentations and time management (training provided).
  • Writing assistance includes brainstorming topics, identifying the questions they hope to answer, developing outlines, formulating/strengthening arguments, helping revise drafts in various stages of development, helping students correctly cite sources and other plagiarism avoidance (including AI), cover letter and resume help, personal statements, as well as more in-depth writing projects such as theses, dissertations and research proposals.
  • Help students develop their independent writing and revision skills (and presentation and time management skills in those cases) and increase their awareness of additional university resources.
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
  • Complete administrative tasks, such as writing brief descriptions of each session and emailing a brief summary of daily attendance.
  • Other opportunities include leading in-class workshops and/or specialized ULC workshops.

Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $29.20/hr through August 31 (new pay rate will be determined by next collective bargaining agreement)
