Wrangler - Seasonal
About The Position
This is a seasonal role for a Wrangler in Rothbury, MI. The position involves participating in and implementing programming activities both in and out of the barn, as well as maintaining horses, equipment, and facilities. The Wrangler will need to understand horse behavior, feeding, and health, and be able to manage herds on horseback, on foot, or by driving. Identifying horses by name and level, safely moving them, and following specific feeding and tacking instructions are key responsibilities. The role also includes assessing feed and hay quality, following grooming procedures, identifying and reporting health issues to the Equestrian Manager, and adhering to all safety guidelines and emergency procedures. Collaboration with staff to ensure timely rider mounting and departures, assisting inexperienced riders, and clear communication, especially during emergencies, are essential. Knowledge of all property trails and effective communication of ride position are also required. Fence repair around pastures and barns may be necessary.
Requirements
- Able to lift, throw and stack square hay bales (up to 75 pounds) on wagons, vehicles, barns, and lofts.
- Understand all safety guidelines as described in wrangler manual and procedures for working around horses, riding, maintaining barn, and participating in any equine programming.
- Able to ride at walk, trot, canter, gallop.
Responsibilities
- Participate in and implement programming activities both in and out of the barn.
- Participate in the maintenance of horses, equipment, and facilities.
- Understand horse behavior, feeding, and health.
- Push herd from pasture to pen on horseback, or by walking, running, or driving.
- Identify most horses by name and level.
- Safely move horses from pen to barn and into correct stalls.
- Follow feeding instructions specific to each horse.
- Follow tacking instructions specific to each horse, including lifting saddles up to 50 pounds.
- Correctly assess feed and hay quality.
- Follow grooming procedures according to standards.
- Identify health issues including wounds, illness, and lameness and report to Equestrian Manager.
- Follow all safety guidelines and policies for guests and staff.
- Understand emergency procedures for any equestrian accidents/incidents.
- Work well with other staff to ensure riders are mounted and rides depart on time.
- Help inexperienced riders feel safe and know when to end a ride immediately.
- Communicate effectively and clearly during any situation, especially emergencies.
- Know all trails on property and effectively communicate position of ride in case of emergency.
- Repair fences around pastures and barns when necessary.
