About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Director, Clinical Education and Patient Safety; the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse (WOCN) is a consultant for wound, fistula management, ostomy continence care and education. The WOCN is a resource for the ordering and proper utilization of specialty pressure redistribution products. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse licensure and registration.
  • Current Board Certification in Wounds and Ostomy care.
  • Must possess a sound knowledge of nursing principles, procedures, and standards of practice as determined by state and federal regulations.
  • Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for communicating, educating and monitoring changes to clinical practice and expectations including reviewing documentation and providing additional support to staff.
  • Collaborates with the nursing leadership team in the strategic planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of systems to support and enhance the competence, autonomy, and accountability of the nursing staff including defining nursing standards, practices, and educational needs of patient and nursing staff.
  • Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and revises patient plan of care with regards to wound, fistula, ostomy and continent care issues.
  • Provides consultation, direct assistance and education to nursing staff, physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Makes recommendations to the physicians for wound care orders and provides evidence-based research as needed.
  • Trains and supports appropriate clinical staff to effectively assess wounds, recommend appropriate protocols and advocate with physicians.
  • Manages and advises on ostomy issues and performs pre- and post-op teaching support and stoma siting as needed.
  • Provides education for clean intermittent catheterization (Memorial Campus).
  • For educational programs, maintains required data, records, and statistics for administrative, regulatory, and evaluation purposes.
  • Provides basic wound care orientation to all newly hired nursing staff.
  • Provides ongoing in-services and training related to wound care and ostomy care.
  • Documents patient/significant others response to instruction and ability to provide care as needed.
  • Addresses and implements a plan to prevent/treat peristomal skin complications.
  • Assists in establishing standards of care and protocols.
  • Interfaces with Materials Management regarding the wound care formulary and specialty bed purchase or rental products with regard to the selection of related pressure redistribution products.
  • Provides telephone consults for patients, home care and other nursing facilities.
  • Participates in the precepting of affiliating professional students, residents and serves as preceptor to WOCN students as needed.
  • Attends WOCN related educational programs locally, regionally and nationally as able.
  • Keeps self and staff informed of current research in areas of clinical specialty.
  • Works with vendors and Materials Management to maintain the most appropriate cost-effective wound care formulary.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
  • Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
  • Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
