About The Position

The Wound Care Nurse - RN plays a critical role in assessing, planning, and delivering specialized care to patients with acute and chronic wounds. This position focuses on promoting wound healing, preventing infection, and improving patient outcomes through evidence-based practices and patient education. The nurse collaborates closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to develop individualized care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. Ultimately, the Wound Care Nurse serves as a patient advocate, educator, and clinical expert dedicated to enhancing quality of life for individuals experiencing wound-related health challenges.

Requirements

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical nursing experience, preferably in wound care, home health, or related settings.
  • Strong knowledge of wound healing physiology, infection control, and patient safety standards.
  • Clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate wound characteristics and patient conditions accurately.
  • Strong communication skills are essential for educating patients and collaborating effectively with healthcare team members to ensure coordinated care.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities enable the nurse to adapt treatment plans based on wound progression and emerging clinical evidence.
  • Proficiency with documentation and electronic health records ensures precise tracking of patient outcomes and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Empathy and patient-centered care skills foster trust and adherence to treatment regimens, ultimately supporting optimal healing and quality of life.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in Wound Care Nursing (e.g., Certified Wound Care Nurse - CWCN).
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and wound documentation software.
  • Advanced certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT).
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams within outpatient, hospital, or home health environments.
  • Continuing education or training in wound care innovations, pressure injury prevention, and diabetic foot care.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive wound assessments including size, depth, tissue type, and signs of infection or complications.
  • Develop and implement individualized wound care plans based on clinical guidelines and patient-specific factors.
  • Perform wound treatments such as debridement, dressing changes, and application of advanced wound care products.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on wound management techniques, prevention strategies, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Collaborate with physicians, physical therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate holistic care.
  • Document all wound care interventions, patient progress, and outcomes accurately in the medical record.
  • Monitor for signs of infection or deterioration and escalate care promptly when necessary.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and stay current with advances in wound care best practices.
