About The Position

The goal of this position is to ensure a safe and healthy environment and workplace for students in the general work area(s) of the Faculty of Engineering workshops. This involves ensuring students work according to bylaws, rules, and regulations, and that no machines are used or brought into the area. The role fosters attention to cleanliness, health, and safety by all users of the facilities and ensures that problems are recorded and reported to the relevant parties in the University. This position does not involve any machining work, the use of machinery, or supervising the use of machines by anyone else. The position reports to the manager of the workshop and is responsible for ensuring adherence to health and safety rules and regulations by any student working in the open areas of the Macdonald Engineering workshops/project laboratory area during specifically assigned off-hours operations.

Requirements

  • Two years of relevant experience working in a workshop/machining environment
  • Interest in health and safety
  • Diligent, dependable, and with great attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills in English with the ability and conviction to present, explain, defend, and impose adherence to rules and regulations
  • Authorized to work in Canada
  • Willing to work in the province of Quebec
  • Level 4 English proficiency (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4

Nice To Haves

  • A graduate university student with experience in a design team or relevant engineering training is considered an asset.
  • Different Safety trainings, such as First Aid and WHIMS, are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring attendance (Control access to workshop general work area, logs presence of users and work carried out)
  • Enforcing policies and regulations, including work safety and checking training credentials
  • Ensuring that instructions, procedures and safety measures are followed, and safety equipment is worn
  • Informing, changing, and preventing any unsafe practices or processes and reporting to the workshop manager or security personnel
  • Ensuring cleanliness of workshop general work area during and after hours of operations
  • Responsible for records, reports as needed
