About The Position

The Maine Municipal Association (MMA) is seeking an experienced Workers' Compensation professional to join the Risk Management Services department as a Workers' Compensation Claims Representative. In this position, you will be responsible for managing the lost time claims of assigned members. Under the supervision of the Assistant Claims Manager or Claims Supervisor, the claims representative is responsible for the management of claims in accordance with The Workers’ Compensation Statute and applicable Maine Bureau of Insurance Regulations, and internal MMA claims management guidelines. This role involves direct engagement with program participants, managing claims within established guidelines, and partnering with underwriting and loss control teams. You will work under the Claims Manager's direction, with day-to-day support from experienced supervisors. Performance is subject to review through audit, reports, and observation.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation laws, regulations, and claims management practices, including investigation, evaluation, and negotiation.
  • Understanding of medical terminology, occupational health, and risk management principles.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document claim activity and produce reports.
  • Familiarity with MMA Workers’ Compensation Fund programs and proficiency with relevant computer and claims systems, combined with strong organizational, prioritization, and relationship-building abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree in Business or a related field or equivalent combination of professional experience.
  • One to three years’ experience handling workers' compensation claims or similar experience.
  • Professional development, including AIC, ARM or CPCU desirable.
  • State of WC Maine Adjuster’s License within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Manage workers’ compensation claims from investigation through resolution, including determining compensability, evaluating exposure and reserves, and negotiating settlements.
  • Calculate and administer indemnity and medical benefits in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with members, medical providers, vendors, and legal counsel to support return-to-work efforts, manage litigation, and resolve claims efficiently.
  • Complete required filings and reporting, maintain accurate documentation, and provide guidance to program participants on claim processes and best practices.
