About The Position

A Work Study (WS) at SENMC plays a vital role in promoting the mission of the department/office and college. Generally, the SW is required to perform various clerical, administrative or semi-professional tasks related to the efficient functioning of the department/office and its programs and services. Overall, the student will ultimately assist in maintaining an organized workflow for the department/office and performing duties to assist with work operations as assigned by the supervisor or their designee. For positions assigned to the SENMC Bookstore, the Work Study student assists with daily bookstore operations, including customer service, merchandise organization, textbook and supply distribution, inventory support, and maintaining an orderly retail environment. The position provides students with valuable experience in retail operations, customer relations, cash handling, inventory management, and business practices. Bookstore Work Study assignments begin on August 1, with students generally working scheduled hours between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. prior to the start of the Fall 2026 semester. Beginning on the first day of the Fall 2026 semester, the bookstore's operating schedule changes, and student work schedules will transition to evening hours of 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, based on departmental needs and the student's class schedule. Scheduling is subject to supervisor approval and consideration of the student's academic commitments. This position requires a dependable and professional student employee who can effectively support bookstore operations during busy and high-volume periods while maintaining satisfactory academic progress. A Student Worker position is a customer-service oriented job, and students will gain valuable customer service and professional skills in their positions. All students must understand the importance of and maintain confidentiality in daily work operations. This includes information protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable laws and regulations. Students will be expected to abide by all college policies and procedures. Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain their enrollment status to work in these positions. Student Workers may qualify for Federal Work Study, which will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Some positions may require a minimum GPA, as determined by department/office guidelines. Student Workers are permitted to work a maximum of twenty (20) hours per week and cannot work in multiple hourly positions. The assignment may include day, evening and/or weekend hours, depending on the position. Students are expected to arrive to work on time. Scheduling of hours is at the discretion of the supervisor, based on department/office needs and consideration of the student's class schedule and availability each semester. It is the supervisor’s responsibility to work with the student to ensure a healthy balance of academic and non-academic commitments.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED certificate with one (1) year of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience may be considered as approved by the Human Resources Department.
  • Demonstrate written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to perform custodial and organizational duties while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to demonstrate dependability, punctuality, and strong work ethic.
  • Some clerical or administrative experience.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of general office machines and telephone system.
  • Ability and willingness to work cooperatively with others.
  • High degree of discretion dealing with confidential information.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain their enrollment status to work in these positions.
  • Performing the essential functions of this position requires the use of a computer throughout most of the workday, the ability to navigate a typical office environment, significant amounts of interpersonal interaction including oral and written communication, and the ability to keep track of multiple tasks, projects, deadlines, information sources and business processes.

Responsibilities

  • Provides coverage of the front desk and phones and greets all callers and visitors in a courteous, polite and professional manner.
  • Answers basic questions regarding bookstore services, textbooks, supplies, merchandise, and campus resources, or refers individuals to the appropriate point of contact.
  • Assists with point-of-sale operations, including basic cash handling and processing transactions, as assigned and trained.
  • Maintains cleanliness, organization, and visual presentation of bookstore displays, shelving areas, storage areas, and common spaces by performing daily housekeeping duties, including cleaning, sweeping, and mopping.
  • Takes accurate messages and responds to work-related emails, as assigned.
  • Assists customers with locating textbooks, course materials, school supplies, apparel, and other bookstore merchandise.
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains professionalism during busy and high-volume periods.
  • Assists with receiving, unpacking, stocking, pricing, and organizing textbook shipments and bookstore merchandise.
  • Maintains bookstore office supplies, equipment, printers, and copiers and reports maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  • Demonstrates reliability, dependability, punctuality, and regular attendance in fulfilling assigned duties.
  • Performs other related duties, special projects, and assignments as required to support bookstore operations.
