About The Position

La Crosse County Land Services department is currently seeking a GIS intern to support the GIS team within the Land Information division. This would entail GIS data manipulation, process automation, cartographic design, web development, and a wide range of other GIS related efforts. The intern will report to the Land Information manager and will work closely with department staff on various tasks to ensure the County enterprise GIS contains necessary and accurate information in order to support the needs of the stakeholders within County departments and throughout the County municipalities. The intern’s duties will use a wide variety of software, both desktop and web based, to create digital and physical spatial media. The purpose of this internship is to help individuals gain practical experience, become acquainted with professionals in their field of interest, and develop an understanding of workplace responsibilities and effective working relationships. The schedule for interns is flexible, but worked hours must occur between 7:30am and 5pm and may not exceed 30hours/week.

Requirements

  • Completed at least TWO YEARS at a college/university working towards a degree in Geographical Information Systems or comparable field of study or have equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with a variety of GIS software solutions.
  • ArcGIS Pro experience required.
  • Entry level understanding of various geospatial data types and formats.
  • Experience editing geospatial data.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft’s suite of products.
  • Ability to produce accurate, timely delivery of complex materials.
  • Organized.
  • Able to prioritize and accomplish a wide variety and scale of projects.
  • Requires frequent exchanges of routine and non-routine information with staff using effective oral and written communication skills along with the ability to convey GIS information to non-GIS users in a training environment.
  • Ability to work in a stationary position in the office for extended periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SQL, Python and/or Arcade desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data entry and edits for spatial and tabular data.
  • Assist in publication and use of feature services in the web GIS environment.
  • Produce printed and/or web-based maps for information and analysis.
  • Manipulate GIS data within enterprise GIS environments.
  • Solve spatial questions using creative problem solving and staff communication.
