About The Position

This role involves a dual responsibility: performing duties as a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) in the operating room and functioning as a Patient Care Aide (PCA) on the Postpartum (PP) unit when not actively involved in surgical cases. As a CST, the individual will act as the primary scrub person, anticipating the surgeon's needs, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment, and ensuring quality patient care during operative procedures. This includes understanding the procedure, maintaining policies and procedures, and performing daily cleaning and stocking of the OR, as well as recording temperature and humidity. When not in the OR, the scrub tech will transition to a PCA role on the PP unit. PCA duties include assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, oral care, linen changes, ambulation, peri-care, passing trays, TCDB (turn, cough, deep breathe), obtaining vital signs, monitoring intake and output (I&O), Foley care, and applying/removing Sequential Compression Device (SCD) hoses. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the nursery with tasks like passing newborn babies, folding linen, stocking cribs, and feeding babies. The individual must be knowledgeable of the "CODE B" policy/procedure and their role in a Code Pink Drill. The scrub tech will also provide support in the Labor and Delivery (L&D) area, assisting with setting up sterile tables and cleaning instruments post-delivery. On the PP floor, they are responsible for Hourly Rounding with Intention every 1-2 hours using "Aidet" to ensure patient safety and quality care, and providing hand-off communication to the oncoming scrub tech.

  • Knowledge of "CODE B" policy/procedure and role in an actual Code Pink Drill.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
  • Knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during operative procedures.
  • Understanding of the procedure being performed.
  • Awareness of maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform ADL's: bathing the patient, oral care, linen changing, ambulation, peri-care, passing trays, TCDB of surgical patients, obtaining vital signs, I&O, Foley care and application and removal of SCD hoses.

  • Ability to assure Hourly Rounding with Intention on patients Q1-2 hours on the PP floor utilizing "Aidet".
  • Ability to provide hand-off communication to the on-coming scrub tech.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminates reusable medical supplies and equipment, using appropriate methods.
  • Disassembles, cleans, sterilizes, and reassembles equipment.
  • Inspects items for gross contamination after pre-sterilization.
  • Prepares trays and sets.
  • Packages items to protect points, cutting edges, and delicate instruments and to ensure effective penetration medium.
  • Selects appropriate methods for sterilizing.
  • Loads, unloads, and operates sterilizers and other related equipment.
  • Periodically tests equipment for effectiveness and absolute sterilization.
  • Adheres to recommended parameters for each sterilizer and records chemical, mechanical, and biological results and informs supervisor of any positive test results.
  • Tests, cleans, sterilizes, stores, issues, and explains proper use of equipment.
  • Inspects sterilized items for indication of proper sterilization, labels items to show sterilization data, stores items to preserve sterile conditions.
  • Fills requests for items based on daily schedules of on individual requisitions.
  • Restock Crash Carts, ensuring 100% compliance with established policies and inventory control.
  • Performs periodic inspections as directed by schedule cyclic maintenance program.
  • Exchanges Crash Cart immediately after notification of a Code E or other use to include cleanup, restock and sterilization of used cart.
  • Assists in the inventory of patient care charges.
  • Fill requisitions after normal duty hours.
  • Act as a primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment utilized for surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure.
  • Provide daily cleaning and stocking of the O.R. and records the temperature and humidity of the O.R. daily.
  • When not assisting with surgical cases, work as patient care aide on the PP unit.
