About The Position

ABC7 (WLS-TV) Chicago is the Midwest flagship of the ABC television network. ABC7 leads the market in local news coverage with daily linear and streaming newscasts and has been in the number one position in local news since March 1986! The station’s offices and studios are in The Loop in downtown Chicago. This internship is a part time (18 hours a week), six-month commitment in the Chicago, IL area from June 2026-January 2027. ABC7 Chicago is looking for an intern who wants to learn from the experienced team from Chicago’s #1 source for news. Our ideal candidate is ready to develop their news judgment, writing skills, and reporting skills and is prepared to grow as a journalist by experiencing the daily opportunities and unpredictable nature of broadcast news.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in broadcasting, new media production, or script writing
  • Proficiency with social media
  • Ability to work in independent and collaborative environments
  • Must be a junior or senior
  • Declared major or previous coursework in a mass media/new media-related field
  • Be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months at time of application posting OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Internship
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have not completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.
  • Possess unrestricted work authorization
  • Able to have a consistent, reliable work schedule throughout the internship
  • The approximate dates of this internship are June 2026 through August/September 2026
  • Fully available for the duration of the internship, working 18 hours each week
  • Able to provide own housing for the duration of internship program in the Chicago, IL area
  • Able to provide reliable transportation to/from work

Responsibilities

  • Travel with reporters and photojournalists in the field for newsgathering, story completion, and live remotes
  • Observe anchors in the studio during live newscasts
  • Practice writing copy and editing video
  • Shadow linear producers, executive producers, digital producers, and special projects producers in their respective roles
  • Attend morning and/or afternoon editorial meetings
  • Get an up-close look at how news is distributed beyond TV to our myriad of digital and social media platforms
