About The Position

SSM Health is offering a Youth Apprentice Phlebotomy Assistant position at their Beaver Dam Clinic for upcoming high school juniors or seniors interested in a healthcare career. This role provides hands-on experience, mentorship, and skills for in-demand healthcare roles, with an earning potential of $17/hour. Youth Apprentices will help provide a welcoming environment to patients and assist with specimen collection while ensuring a safe work environment. They will partner with a licensed/certified professional mentor who will guide their training and provide ongoing support. Requirements

  • High school junior or senior
  • 16 years of age
  • Must be authorized and approved by the Wisconsin Youth Apprentice Program in accordance with your local school criteria
  • Reliable transportation to get to and from work
  • Satisfactory progress towards graduation
  • Commit to completing 450 hours at the jobsite (10-15 hours per week)
  • Demonstrated maturity and responsibility
  • Skill with attending to details, excellent attendance and a strong work ethic
  • Must be at least 16 years of age prior to start date and current high school student
  • Acceptance into Youth Apprenticeship program through local high school
  • No experience required

Responsibilities

  • Effectively work as part of a team, communicate effectively with close attention to details
  • Maintain academic and attendance requirements for participation in the Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • Participate in progress reviews scheduled with mentors, school staff, parent(s) or guardian(s), and employer
  • Assist with patient check in assuring two identifiers are used to confirm identity
  • Deliver samples to the laboratory and perform administrative duties to support the department including the cleaning and maintenance of collection area and equipment
  • Under the direction of an experienced professional and upon completed training, assist with the collection and preparation of blood and other specimens
  • Draws blood for tests, transfusions, donations, and/or research
  • Prepares for phlebotomy procedure
  • Performs capillary collection
  • Collects non-blood specimens
  • Performs venipuncture collection
  • Processes specimens and maintains specimen integrity
  • Assists in performing Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests under the supervision of qualified staff
  • Complies with legal restrictions
  • Respects patient confidentiality and maintains Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned
