About The Position

Join Apple’s Wireless Technologies and Ecosystems team as a Wireless Software & AI/ML Intern. The Wireless Software team develops cellular and wireless connectivity for Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. This internship explores how artificial intelligence and machine learning can analyze application traffic patterns and enable intelligent baseband optimizations for seamless user experiences. The intern will research, design, and prototype intelligent traffic classification and cellular optimization algorithms. The role uses multi-layer system telemetry to make cellular protocol stacks application-aware and dynamically optimize communications for diverse user scenarios. The internship is based in Beijing and requires a full-time commitment for at least six months.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Information Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Available for a full-time internship of at least six months based in Beijing.
  • Foundational knowledge of wireless communications or cellular network protocol stacks, such as LTE or 5G NR.
  • Solid understanding of core machine learning and deep learning algorithms.
  • Experience with standard machine-learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Scikit-Learn.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills in both Chinese and English.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with 5G NR protocol architecture and radio resource management concepts.
  • Knowledge of multimedia streaming protocols and gaming QoS/QoE requirements.
  • Experience with lightweight on-device ML model deployment or runtime optimization.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze wireless network and protocol telemetry to identify application traffic characteristics and performance indicators.
  • Design, train, and evaluate lightweight AI/ML models for real-time application and traffic-pattern classification.
  • Explore and prototype cross-layer optimization strategies for experiences such as streaming and low-latency interactive applications.
  • Build simulation or on-device evaluation pipelines to benchmark QoS/QoE metrics, including throughput, latency, and stability.
  • Collaborate with wireless engineering teams to review designs, validate results, and present technical findings.
