About The Position

The County of Lambton is seeking two temporary full-time Winter Patrollers to join their Infrastructure and Development Division. This role involves patrolling the County Road network on weekends to document maintenance needs and dispatch resources to combat winter storm activity. The position requires adherence to Minimum Maintenance Standards and the County's Salt Management Plan and Storm Response Guidelines. Responsibilities include responding to public and police complaints, logging road conditions and accidents, and ensuring compliance with health and safety policies. The role may also involve operating County equipment in a backup capacity and maintaining knowledge of municipal winter control methods and legal requirements. Incumbents must stay updated on relevant legislation and policies and possess the physical ability to perform the job duties.

Requirements

  • Secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent experience with completion of the AORS municipal road maintenance course.
  • Current valid Province of Ontario Driver’s License, minimum class DZ.
  • A minimum of three years of public works experience relevant to the scope of service associated with the position.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and use of a vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the County Road network on weekends to ensure it meets Minimum Maintenance Standards.
  • Direct County resources (manpower, equipment, material) in combating winter storm activity according to the Salt Management Plan and Storm Response Guidelines.
  • Call out County forces based on weather conditions and notify local municipalities of road conditions.
  • Receive and respond to complaints from the public and police, suggesting corrective action or explaining the County's position and policy.
  • Log and report particulars regarding road conditions and accidents on County Roads.
  • Perform work in accordance with the County’s Health & Safety policy and program and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Suggest operational changes to improve winter control operations.
  • Operate County equipment (e.g., snow plough equipment, tractor backhoe, front-end loader) as required in a backup capacity.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of municipal winter control methods, procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Keep up-to-date on relevant legislation, collective bargaining agreements, and County Policies and Procedures.
  • Possess the physical ability to meet the duties and responsibilities of the job description.
