About The Position

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Public Works Division, is seeking a Winter Equipment Operator II for a casual, on-call position. This role involves operating various types of equipment and performing tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the County Roads Systems. The position reports to the Patrol Supervisor and is responsible for adhering to legislative, regulatory, and operational policies. The role includes operating a dump truck with snow plow and sander, culvert steaming, equipment maintenance, stockpiling materials, installing snow fence, replacing culverts, performing general road maintenance, and shop maintenance. Health and safety are paramount, and employees are responsible for incorporating these standards into all aspects of their work.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid D-Z driver’s licence
  • Physically able to perform tasks involving heavy labour
  • Minimum of three year’s progressive experience in the operation of heavy trucks and other related equipment
  • Mechanical aptitude to perform a wide variety of tasks relating to equipment maintenance, operation and repair

Responsibilities

  • Operates a 6-ton minimum dump truck equipped with snow plow and sander equipment during winter months, ploughing and salting County road network in compliance with Minimum Maintenance Standards.
  • Performs culvert steaming to open blocked culverts.
  • Conducts equipment maintenance for the winter fleet, including washing, greasing, changing plough and wing steel, and oil changes.
  • Stocks piles winter material into storage buildings.
  • Installs snow fence to reduce drifting.
  • Replaces driveway and road cross-culverts, which includes operating machinery (backhoe and dump truck), shoveling, raking, packing, setting up temporary traffic protection, repairing guiderail, setting up road detours, maintaining cuts in asphalt, ditching, and landscaping.
  • Mows ditches with a tractor/mower unit.
  • Performs weed trimming around signs, steel beam and post, and cable.
  • Cuts and/or trims trees within the County right-of-way.
  • Clears brush from the right-of-way for sight lines.
  • Operates a diesel-powered chipper and gas-powered chainsaws.
  • Completes necessary paperwork for documentation of deficiencies and repairs, complying with Minimum Maintenance Standards.
  • Performs general road maintenance duties such as patrolling, patching, and grading.
  • Performs general shop maintenance such as sweeping, cleaning, safety inspections, and general shop repairs.
  • Ensures that health and safety standards are incorporated into all aspects of work and that facilities and resources are made available to ensure the successful execution of all required Health and Safety legislation as well as corporate policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Performs other related duties as requested and required.
