About The Position

This flexibly classed position is designed to facilitate entry into the professional wildlife biologist series and provides a training path in order to advance within the job class to the full working potential of Wildlife Biologist 2. The incumbent will learn all facets of wildlife program implementation by working closely with biologists to provide biological and technical support to wildlife management programs in Regions IV which stretches west from the Wrangell-St. Elias Range, through the Alaska Peninsula, to the end of the Aleutian chain and Pribilof Islands. Through guidance and training, this position will oversee the daily operations of Division of Wildlife Conservation’s Public Wildlife Information Center in Palmer, the supervision of technical staff, and the dissemination of wildlife information to the public and other area offices as the regional permitter and as the primary regional representative on the Regulations, Information, Permitting and Harvest Implementation Team. This position fulfills the Division of Wildlife Conservation’s mission in the Central-Southwest Region IV to conserve and enhance Alaska's wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. The incumbent maintains, enhances, and promotes opportunities to hunt, trap, and view wildlife while providing opportunities for Alaskans to gain knowledge of and appreciation for all of Alaska's wildlife, its management, and ways to interact with wildlife safely and ethically. Requirements

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of wildlife, including classification, taxonomy, population dynamics, distribution, habitat requirements, life histories, reproduction, behaviors, conservation, and care of wildlife.
  • Ability to plan, distribute, and monitor work assignments; set task priorities; evaluate work performance and provide feedback to others.
  • Ability to ensure that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Knowledge of firearm usage and related issues, such as ammunition, range regulations and safety.
  • Ability to work with clients and customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations.
  • Commitment to providing quality products and services.
  • Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Ability to legally carry a firearm.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Deputization as a commissioned Fish and Game Peace Officer.
  • Wildlife chemical immobilization certification.
  • Wildlife capture and handling certification.
  • Procurement Certification, Level I
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
  • OR A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
  • For Wildlife Biologist 2: One year of professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
  • For Wildlife Biologist 2: A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management, will substitute for the required year of professional level biologist experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of Division of Wildlife Conservation’s Public Wildlife Information Center in Palmer.
  • Supervise technical staff.
  • Disseminate wildlife information to the public and other area offices.
  • Act as the regional permitter.
  • Serve as the primary regional representative on the Regulations, Information, Permitting and Harvest Implementation Team.
  • Administer and participate in wildlife management programs across DWC’s Regions IV & V.
  • Interact with members of the public issuing licenses and permits.
  • Collect harvest and field information from the public's hunting and subsistence activities.
  • Respond to nuisance wildlife issues in the front country.
  • Conduct wildlife surveys, investigations, and handling wildlife in the field.
  • Directly oversee two Fish and Wildlife Technicians and other shared staff indirectly.
