About The Position

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) is seeking a Wildland Fire Suppression Specialist to join their team. The mission of ODF is to protect and promote resilient forests that benefit all Oregonians. This role involves protecting millions of acres of forests, communities, and natural resources. Wildland firefighters are expected to work long hours in challenging and changing conditions, including high temperatures and steep terrain. The position offers the opportunity to work in beautiful locations and build lasting friendships. The specialist will be part of the ODF team responsible for the regulation and protection of both public and private forest land in Oregon.

Requirements

  • Two (2) seasons of Wildland firefighting experience
  • Must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level if selected for employment
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire
  • Experience working collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Ability to perform in high stress, fast paced emergency situations
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment commonly used for wildland fire

Responsibilities

  • Complete wildland firefighting activities
  • Locate fires using maps, Global Positioning System (GPS), and compass
  • Construct fire line using hand tools or power equipment by cutting, scraping, digging, and chopping or burning out to remove flammable materials
  • Operate many different types of fire equipment
