About The Position

The WIC Nutritionist will be responsible for specific duties and assist the Nutrition Education Coordinator in accomplishing Local Agency Objectives. This role requires the ability to perform basic math functions, write, read and comprehend, and possess strong expressive and receptive language skills.

Requirements

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the American Dietetic Association.
  • Hold at least a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree from an accredited 4-year institution, with emphasis on one of the following: Food and Nutrition, Community Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition Education, Human Nutrition, Nutrition Science or equivalent.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions.
  • Ability to write, read and comprehend.
  • Expressive and receptive language skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of one year’s experience is strongly recommended, or may be supervised in the agency by the Nutrition Education Coordinator.
  • One year of graduate work can replace the one year work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform participant certification and recertification screenings including income eligibility, nutritional/medical risk, blood work values and data entry in QWIC.
  • Perform anthropometric measurements and use and interpret growth and prenatal weight gain grids.
  • Perform hematological tests on applicants after completing training requirements and holding a valid Certificate of training approved by the Bureau of Laboratories.
  • Prescribe WIC supplemental foods tailored to meet individual needs.
  • Provide immunization screenings and voter registration opportunities according to policy.
  • Identify and prepare nutrition care plans/goals for all high-risk participants and document high-risk contacts.
  • Complete value-enhanced nutritional assessments and prepare nutrition care plans/goals tailored to meet individual needs.
  • Make and record referrals to other health and social agencies, particularly medical assistance, food stamps, food banks, cash assistance, child support enforcement agencies, immunizations, substance abuse education and treatment programs, family planning, and breastfeeding support services.
  • Promote breastfeeding and offer education and support resources, including pump instruction as needed.
  • Perform participant data entry in compliance with Local Agency and State procedures.
  • Travel to satellite clinics for the purpose of delivering WIC services.
  • Follow State Agency and Local Agency Policies and Procedures.
  • Be familiar with the Annual Nutrition Education, Outreach, and Breastfeeding Plans of the Local Agency.
  • Participate in meetings and continuing education programs as appropriate to assigned jobs; possible travel required.
  • Assure local agency compliance with requirements for documenting medical/nutritional risk status and all nutrition education services provided in participants' files.
  • Assist with internal monitoring as requested.
  • Assist in training new employees as requested.
  • Monitor inventory of nutrition/health education materials and supplies.
  • Consult with Nutrition Education Coordinator as needs arise.
  • Assist Nutrition Education Coordinator in preparing, implementing, and evaluating annual goals and objectives.
