About The Position

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutritionist role in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) supports the health and well-being of women, infants, and children by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and health guidance. This position assesses participants’ nutritional needs, develops individualized nutrition care plans, and delivers culturally responsive education. The role focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles, improving health outcomes, and building positive relationships with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science in Food or Nutrition Science.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in nutrition counseling or community nutrition.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish is required.
  • Ability to relate in a supportive and non-judgmental manner to clients of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and income levels.
  • Strong analytical, employee relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing, business communication, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively and in a supportive manner with persons of all backgrounds.
  • Proactive, self-motivated and able to work independently as well as on a team with the ability to exercise sound independent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and a professional demeanor and must positively represent the organization at all times.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and professional working relationships.
  • Must be able to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate.
  • Must be able to be at work regularly and on time.
  • Must be a dynamic self-starter with demonstrated ability to work independently or in a group setting.
  • A can-do attitude and attention to detail, with the ability to organize.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 35 WPM with minimal errors.
  • Must have good computer skills using Microsoft Office and the ability to use Axis departmental systems.
  • Must be able to use office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, etc.).
  • Must be available to work a part-time schedule of 16 hours per week (0.4 FTE), with flexibility to work additional hours based on clinic needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides counseling and guidance on nutrition, breastfeeding, and health related issues to participants in a timely manner.
  • Maintains participant confidentiality and exercises sound judgment in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulations
  • Implements, develops, and documents nutrition care plans in WIC WISE.
  • Identifies highest priority risks to address in counseling session.
  • Uses appropriate nutrition education materials.
  • Allows participant to select nutrition goal.
  • Writes nutrition care plan in INEP screen.
  • Documents nutrition education contact in WIC WISE.
  • Gives referrals as appropriate and documents in WIC Wise “Referral Screen”.
  • Enters in food prescription and issues benefits on WIC card.
  • Schedules follow-up appointments as necessary.
  • Maintains an acceptable productivity rate.
  • Communicates with health providers as needed to obtain accurate, necessary information.
  • Have participant complete a consent form if necessary.
  • Provides nutrition education classes to WIC participants.
  • Assesses participant’s breastfeeding infant practices at individual education appointments.
  • Promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding while exhibiting a positive attitude about breastfeeding to participants and staff.
  • Provides breastfeeding classes and support to WIC participants.
  • Provides referral to IBCLC when work is out of scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates consistent compliance with WIC policies and procedures.
  • Obtains and documents height and weight measurements according to established protocol.
  • Enters data accurately and completely in WIC WISE.
  • Participate in staff meetings, and attend other meetings and training events as assigned.
  • May be required to perform other related duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned.
