About The Position

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. The purpose of the nurse in schools is to facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. This is a temporary RN summer school position to fill the needs of the CGESD's Migrant Program.

Requirements

Registered Nurse through the Oregon State Board of Nursing
Possession of, or ability to qualify for, an Oregon School Nurse license through Teacher’s Standard and Practices Commission (TSPC).
Certified in CPR or BLS
Ability to communicate in Spanish (written and verbal)
Classroom teaching experience
Principles and practices underlying professional nursing.
Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health.
Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health.
Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies.
State and local laws relating to health and social issues.
Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing.
Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers, and community agencies.
Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
Organize a health office and manage time.
Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
Use a computer and various software applications.
Maintain records confidentiality and comply with HIPPA and FERPA as needed.
Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting (ORS.419b.010) you are required to immediately report to Law Enforcement and or Department of Human Services, any instances of suspected child abuse.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s Degree
Master’s Degree in Public Health, Nursing, Nutrition/Dietetics, Social Work, Health Education, Public Administration or other similar field or related professional experience
Minimum of 1 year of public health, community, school or pediatric nursing

Responsibilities

Promotes and protects the optimal health status of children ages 0-21
Provides health assessments
Obtains a health history
Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision, hearing, growth, etc.
Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment.
Identifies abnormal health findings.
Develops and implements a student health plan
Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow through.
Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies.
Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
Plans and implements school health management protocols
Participates in home visits when indicated to assess the family needs as related to the child’s health.
Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases.
Provides health education and anticipatory guidance
Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health.
Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community.
Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.
Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and nursing practices.
Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district.
Where applicable, participates in the IFSP and IEP plan development.
Provides training in delegable duties to district staff
Works with other nurses, district staff and community partners to provide in person and telehealth services.
Follows record keeping protocols and procedures that comply with both HIPPA and FERPA as required
Assist with the Medicaid claiming process and submit claiming information.
Work effectively with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech and dress in a neat, clean and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
Have regular and punctual attendance.
Confer regularly with other ESD staff, ESD Districts, and immediate supervisor.
Follow all District policies, work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.
Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague or District patron.
Demonstrates professional character in all job responsibilities.
Displays courteous, polite disposition, exercising tact and diplomacy.

Attend training related to professional growth to stay current on best practices.
