About The Position

The Wheelchair Technician is responsible for supporting the health, safety, comfort, and mobility of the children and young adults served by St. Mary’s Home through the cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and basic repair of wheelchairs and other mobility equipment. The position is primarily responsible for ensuring wheelchairs and mobility equipment are clean, disinfected, safe, functional, and ready for use. The Wheelchair Technician works independently during overnight hours and assists the Lead Wheelchair Technician with routine maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, documentation, and equipment-related projects within the Occupational Therapy department.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
Strong attention to detail and ability to complete tasks thoroughly and consistently.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic documentation.
Ability to learn wheelchair cleaning, preventive maintenance, basic repair, and troubleshooting procedures.
Ability to safely operate commercial washing machines and other cleaning equipment.
Ability to recognize equipment concerns and determine when additional assistance or professional repair is needed.
Ability to organize work and prioritize assigned responsibilities during the overnight shift.
Dependable attendance and punctuality.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with members of the Occupational Therapy, Nursing, and interdisciplinary teams.
Ability to demonstrate respect, compassion, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries while working in an environment serving children and young adults with significant disabilities.
Frequently bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and transitioning between sitting and standing.
Lifting and carrying at least 50 pounds.
Pushing, pulling, positioning, and maneuvering wheelchairs and other mobility equipment.
Standing and walking for extended periods.
Performing repetitive movements associated with cleaning and equipment maintenance.
Working with cleaning products and disinfectants in accordance with required safety procedures.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience in healthcare, rehabilitation equipment, wheelchair or durable medical equipment, maintenance, environmental services, or another hands-on position preferred but not required.
Previous wheelchair-maintenance experience is not required; training will be provided for assigned responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Thoroughly clean and disinfect wheelchairs and other mobility equipment in accordance with established infection-control and departmental procedures.
Safely operate commercial washing machines and other cleaning equipment used in the cleaning and maintenance of mobility equipment.
Inspect wheelchairs and mobility equipment for cleanliness, wear, damage, missing components, and basic safety concerns.
Complete basic wheelchair maintenance, approved emergency repairs, adjustments, and modifications following appropriate training and established procedures.
Assist the Lead Wheelchair Technician with scheduled six-month wheelchair maintenance and preventive maintenance activities.
Follow established procedures to ensure routine wheelchair maintenance is completed on schedule and accurately documented.
Complete required documentation related to wheelchair maintenance, repairs, inspections, and equipment concerns in the electronic health record and other designated systems.
Identify equipment concerns requiring additional repair, replacement, assessment, or professional service and communicate those concerns to the appropriate Occupational Therapy or Nursing team member.
Assist with troubleshooting wheelchair and mobility-equipment concerns within the scope of training and assigned responsibilities.
Move, transport, position, and maneuver wheelchairs and other mobility equipment throughout the facility as needed.
Maintain wheelchair maintenance areas, storage areas, tools, supplies, and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Follow infection-control practices, safety requirements, equipment-maintenance procedures, and St. Mary’s Home policies.
Work independently during overnight hours while maintaining consistent productivity, attention to detail, and quality of work.
Communicate completed work, equipment concerns, repair needs, and outstanding issues to the Lead Wheelchair Technician and other appropriate team members.
Support the Occupational Therapy department with other wheelchair, adaptive-equipment, or equipment-related duties as assigned.
