The Space Systems Business Area at Leidos is seeking a Build Boss to join our team in Huntsville, AL. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the Proliferated Space Portfolio in the execution of OPIR Space Payloads program mission. In this mission we design, produce, and deliver next-generation Infrared (IR) Sensor Payloads in support of the Space Development Agency (SDA) missile warning and missile tracking architecture. As the Build Boss, you will serve as the single point of accountability for assigned flight payload serial numbers from kit release through final customer delivery — ensuring hardware is built to the highest standards, tested thoroughly, documented completely, and delivered on time to support our nation's missile defense mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or related technical field with 8+ years of relevant experience or Master’s degree in related technical field with 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience as a Hardware Owner, Article Manager, Build Boss, or Missile Mom on a defense aerospace or space hardware production program
  • Experience with flight hardware production including assembly, integration, and test of complex electro-optical or electronic systems
  • Working knowledge of configuration management principles including ECPs, CCBs, and as-built documentation
  • Experience with Non-Conformance Report (NCR) processes and Material Review Board (MRB) dispositions
  • Familiarity with process travelers and manufacturing execution systems such as Solumina or equivalent
  • Understanding of workmanship standards including IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and NASA workmanship standards
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Active Secret clearance; US Citizenship required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on space payload production programs supporting DoD or Intelligence Community customers
  • Familiarity with SDA (Space Development Agency) program requirements and delivery processes
  • Experience with IR sensor payloads, electro-optical systems, or cryogenic hardware production
  • Knowledge AS9100 quality management system requirements
  • Experience supporting Pre-Ship Reviews (PSR) and Flight Readiness Reviews (FRR)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the single point of accountability for assigned payload serial number(s) from kit release through final customer delivery; maintain real-time awareness of hardware location, build status, and configuration at all times
  • Own and drive the detailed build schedule for assigned serial number(s) against the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS); proactively identify schedule bottlenecks and develop recovery plans when delays occur
  • Ensure all process travelers are current, accurate, and properly executed at every build step; verify as-built configuration matches approved build-to-print drawings and specifications
  • Enforce NASA and military workmanship standards on all assigned hardware; witness and verify completion of all required in-process inspections per process travelers
  • Identify, document, and track all Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for assigned hardware through MRB disposition; ensure Class I nonconformances receive Prime contractor approval and Class II nonconformances are properly reported
  • Verify kit completeness prior to assembly start; resolve parts shortages before impacting build flow; monitor shelf life of all materials used in assigned hardware
  • Ensure all parts are sourced from authorized distributors with valid Certificates of Conformance (CoCs) per DFARS 252.246-7008 counterfeit parts prevention requirements
  • Witness critical test events including functional test, environmental test, electrical interface verification, and Acceptance Test Procedure (ATP) execution; drive resolution of all test anomalies and failures on assigned hardware
  • Compile and verify completeness of the End Item Data Package (EIDP) and Delivery Data Package for assigned serial numbers; lead Pre-Ship Review (PSR) preparation ensuring zero open critical items at shipment
  • Provide daily hardware status updates to the Production Manager and Program Manager; lead daily build station stand-ups with technicians, inspectors, and support personnel
  • Support customer and Government Source Inspection (GSI) activities for assigned hardware
  • Document lessons learned after each unit delivery for application to subsequent production units
