The ideal candidate is a Professional Engineer with experience in pipeline systems and strong knowledge of welding engineering, CSA/ASME codes, and quality management practices. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, field application, and the ability to support safe, compliant, and high-quality project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgical, Welding, or related discipline) from an accredited university
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA
  • 3-6 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and ability to travel to field, shop, and vendor locations.
  • Strong working knowledge of: CSA Z662 (Oil & Gas Pipeline Systems), CSA W47.1/W59, ASME B31.3, ASME Section IX, ASME Section V, Applicable Alberta regulations and pressure equipment requirements.
  • Working knowledge of: Welding processes (e.g., SMAW, low-hydrogen processes), Welding procedure development (WPS/PQR) and qualification requirements, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) methods (VT, UT, MT, RT).
  • Understanding of: In-service welding, hot tapping, and pressure system modifications, Weldability, heat input, hydrogen cracking risk, and material behavior.
  • Proven ability to: Troubleshoot welding and fabrication challenges in field and shop environments, Translate engineering requirements into practical, executable field solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess risk, identify constraints, and develop safe engineering solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to: Collaborate across engineering, fabrication, and construction teams, Provide technical training, mentorship, and guidance, Interface with contractors, inspectors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond to technical inquiries effectively.

  • ABSA Welding Examiner Qualification is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert in welding, materials, in-service welding, and hot tapping/isolations, including applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Provide engineering guidance and technical support to the weld shop, construction, operations, and project engineering teams across welding, NDE, and quality-related topics.
  • Maintain deep expertise in applicable codes (e.g., CSA Z662, ASME, API) and ensure their consistent application across projects & internal technical documents.
  • Design welding-related solutions that ensure conformance to applicable codes, standards, and company processes.
  • Develop and/or review engineering deliverables, including: Welding datasheets & project specifications, Welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR inputs), Quality documentation packages, Company standards and procedures, Vendor standards and procedures.
  • Identify process gaps and recommend improvements through field feedback, stakeholder engagement, NCR/CAR and lessons learned.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aligned with corporate quality and engineering programs.
  • Bridge the gap between engineering design and field execution, ensuring practical and safe solutions.
  • Provide technical input during procurement, bid evaluation, and execution phases.
  • Maintain auditable records supporting engineering decisions, calculations, and approvals.
