About The Position

Performs general structural welding using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) semi-automatic and automatic welding equipment. Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) also could be required. This position may also require work on any of the pieces of equipment in the plant and in any other classification.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Ability to pass general aptitude/basic math skills test
  • Ability to lift at least 35 lbs multiple times per day
  • Must pass welding coupon test
  • Must pass written welding test
  • Requires a knowledge of welding fundamentals.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general structural welding using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) semi-automatic and automatic welding equipment.
  • Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) also could be required.
  • May require work on any of the pieces of equipment in the plant and in any other classification.
  • Makes own set-ups including positioning of fixtures, setting of proper welding heat and rate of travel of welding wire and work, loading machine with wire and wire reel, and changing gas or adding flux as required.
  • Checks set-up and completed parts to ensure quality.
  • Loads and unloads fixtures.
  • Uses electrical or mechanical hoists as required.
  • Directs the work of a helper when necessary.
  • Removes slag from weld head.
  • Directs the positioning and removal of parts and material in work area.
  • Records the number of parts produced on time card and move ticket.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, such as changing tips and adjustment of wire feed rolls.
  • Checks job travelers for special instructions or notes BEFORE proceeding with job assigned.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as necessary to keep work area safe, clean and in good order.
  • Receives job prints, work order and/or instructions from supervisor and proceeds with a minimum of supervision and direction.
  • Performs set up and welding operations on all types of welding machines having strict inspection and test requirements.
  • Sets up fixtures; adjusts and regulates machine to obtain best possible penetration, fill, weld quality and performance.
  • Makes compensating adjustments to allow for variations and conditions.
  • Operates various types of equipment.
  • Measures, scribes, positions, and lays out materials, jigs or fixtures, etc., as necessary or directed to ensure completion of cycle, maintaining product quality.
  • Assists new operators in learning the correct and safe operation of the equipment when required.
  • Takes care of machines, tools, equipment, work areas, etc.
  • Reads and writes and performs arithmetic calculations necessary to perform the job.
  • Reads blueprints and maintains tolerances as shown on prints.
