Welder (Starship Pad Build) - Level 4/5

SpaceX•Cape Canaveral, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

SpaceX is hiring a Welder for Starship launch pad construction. The role involves welding carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum structural shapes, tubing, and piping using flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The welder also cuts, trims, fits, and fabricates weldments to required dimensions, verifies job procedures and materials with the lead welder, consults engineering drawings and specifications as needed, and improves the sequence of welding work to reduce turnaround time. The position requires passing an Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral. Work is scheduled on one of two rotating patterns, with either day or night shifts, and overtime may be required. The work takes place outdoors in high heat and humidity and may involve heights and confined spaces. Applicants must meet applicable U.S. Government export-control requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 5 years of welding experience in a fabrication environment using FCAW, or using GTAW on Schedule 10 pipe.
  • Must be able to pass an Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral.
  • Must be willing to work overtime beyond the scheduled shift as needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lb.
  • Must be able to stand, climb, bend, grasp, sit, pull, push, stoop, stretch, and carry.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in high heat and humidity, at heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Must satisfy U.S. Government export-control eligibility requirements, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of GTAW experience on Schedule 10 stainless steel pipe or Schedule 10 carbon steel pipe.
  • 10+ years of FCAW experience on stainless steel or carbon steel.
  • A welding qualification to AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2, AWS D1.6, AWS D17.1, or ASME Section IX.
  • Experience cutting, grinding, and fabricating tube and pipe.
  • Experience with direct-current GTAW.
  • Experience with air-carbon-arc cutting equipment and procedures.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum structural shapes, tubing, and piping using FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, and GTAW.
  • Cut, trim, fit, and fabricate weldments to required dimensions.
  • Confirm the weld procedure, material, and filler size with the lead welder before each job.
  • Review engineering drawings and specifications when a weld procedure does not already cover the work.
  • Improve the sequence of welding work to reduce turnaround time.
