About The Position

The overall function of this position is to fabricate objects to augment or repair mobile equipment, bridge structures, marine vessels, and other Department assets by welding, brazing, grinding and cutting various metal components. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience or training in the welding trade; OR Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicable understanding of basic arc welding knowledge/skills (for Welder role)
  • Presence of more varied tasks, including performance of independent complex tasks that may not be standardized/established procedures (for Welder Master role)

Responsibilities

  • Fabricates brackets, racks, cages, braces, grates and other objects from steel and aluminum stock.
  • Uses steel shapes and plates in welding and brazing equipment such as bushhogs, excavation buckets, and other wear components.
  • Takes measurements and prepares sketches necessary to fabricate various objects.
  • Makes recommendations to supervisors concerning material and fabrication options.
  • Determines equipment and supplies needed according to the type of welding job required.
  • Operates a mobile welding machine to repair broken bridge members, marine vessels, equipment, vehicles, etc. in the field.
