About The Position

Responsible for performing a variety of welding functions under the direction and guidance of a Welder II and/or Senior Welder. The individual should be familiar with gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and capable of using various types of equipment. A welder is also required to perform other miscellaneous tasks, as supervision deems necessary.

Requirements

  • Completion of welding diploma program or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Be able to read and interpret blueprints with assistance from Welder II and/or Senior Welder.
  • Must be able to read a tape measure and calipers.
  • Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to fractional equivalents.
  • Must be able to identify and measure material.

Responsibilities

  • Follows blueprints and machine drawings under the guidance of a Welder II and/or Senior Welder.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as guided by machine recommendations.
  • Manually guides gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical positions.
  • Examines weld for bead size, discontinuities, or defects.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixtures.
  • Tacks assemblies together.
  • Clean weld and remove spatter.
  • Performs all necessary daily operator maintenance on all equipment used in welding.
  • Move parts in and move finished product out of welding area as needed.
