About The Position

ASRC Federal Advanced Research is currently seeking a Welder/Fabricator to support autonomy vehicle integrations in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Military technical innovation is critical to defending our territories and those of our allies. The US Army is currently exploring advancements to equip ground combat forces with autonomous vehicle platforms. This effort presents a unique opportunity for civilians to participate in the research and development efforts that will shape future battlefield combat platforms.

Requirements

  • Capable of standing all day and lifting 45 lbs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Secret Clearance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, certificate from a 2-year technical school or completion of an apprenticeship program leading to a Journeyman status with certifications in the areas of joining different types of materials required.
  • A minimum of 3 years related experience.
  • Willingness to travel 25% annually.

Responsibilities

  • Perform welding, mechanics, fabrication, sheet metal, assembly, analysis and troubleshooting in the assembly or modification of existing vehicles or platforms.
  • Assist in the area of welding ferrous and non-ferrous materials ranging from 1/8" to unlimited thickness using electric, acetylene, and inert gas shielded welding processes: Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).
  • Use Oxy/Acetylene, Plasma, and Carbon Arc Gouging cutting processes.
  • Perform numerous types of weld joints using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions.
  • Weld various types of armored steel and metal alloys.
  • Pass an onsite test to ensure qualification level is In Accordance With (IAW) American Welding Society (AWS) and The Ground Combat Vehicle Welding Code for: AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code for Steel, AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code for Aluminum, The Ground Combat Vehicle Welding Code for Steel 12479550, and The Ground Combat Vehicle Welding Code for Aluminum 12472301.
  • Create vehicle hull structures and turrets, armor cabs for trucks and construction equipment, add-on armor plates and standoffs for existing vehicles, and add-on armor for wheeled and tracked vehicles.
  • Modify hulls, turrets, cabs and structures to accept new mount-on technologies.
  • Utilize knowledge of inspection procedures and techniques to determine conformance with applicable engineering documentation (i.e., drawings, specifications, standards, etc.).
  • Collaborate with other labor functions within TARDEC in developing work pieces from limited information (reverse engineering in some cases) to demonstrate a concept or a principle.
  • Follow all safety, regulatory and environmental/hazardous standards IAW ISO 14001.
